Somehow, there are already strains of HIV that are resistant. In California, we have TB and Staph and VD that are drug resistant, and now, of all things, head lice that are resistant. Back to the bad old days?

There always have been.

This particular strain is rare, the first time it was discovered. There's also speculation that it's weak: the patient's initial viremia was marked by a relatively low viral load, and he became undetectable within three weeks of beginning treatment.

However, this broad subject of pathogen drug resistance is disturbing, and medical research cannot keep pace. It might be an argument for providing medical treatment in society, because that would eliminate ineffective self-treatment with black market drugs, which probably leads to increased drug resistance.
