It has been more wrecked by the fact the construction of new housing has been crushed by locals. For example, there's an attempt to stop construction of new units in the Mission (almost a 10x increase for the same footprint). There are huge swathes of SF that are two story houses on flat ground. These could EASILY be replaced with many storied housing. You bet it won't happen.

People want to preserve in amber what they remember including the pricings. That will NOT work. In the areas where it makes sense and San Francisco proper actually *IS* one, then its perfectly possible to build enough, cheap enough to allow everyone to stay. They have chosen not to and are reaping the harvest they sowed.

Now the only ones who can live there ARE the techies and finance geeks.
