What happened was that the Conservative (=Tory) candidate (who is a Muslim) in a marginal seat up north somewhere wanted to make himself a hero. So he spoke to the EDL and asked them to schedule a demonstration in the constituency. He then wanted to "negotiate" with them to cancel the demonstration, and thus seem to be a hero for defusing a tense situation. The story came out and he at first denied that he'd done nothing wrong. However, the EDL (a very marginal organisation now that most of its nuts and fruitcakes have decamped to UKIP) resented being Tory tools and denounced him, so he's now resigned from the Tory party and another candidate will be chosen.
