Wonkman partly misses the point when he says that corporate outsourcing of support functions makes it impossible for young people to start at the bottom and work their way up. While that may be true with respect to advancement within the corporations themselves, opportunities for advancement may still exist within the companies that provide the outsourced services. For example, if Big Commercial Bank outsources its mailroom functions to Mail Processing Company, a young person hired to work in the mailroom won't have a chance to work up to being an assistant vice president at Big Commercial Bank ... but might well be able to become a regional manager for Mail Processing Company.
