'At NewAPPSBlog, Mohan Matthen makes the contrarian argument--compelling, but I think ultimately incorrect--that a "Oui" outcome in the 1995 Québec referendum would have been good for Québec and rump Canada both.'

I got skeptical when I realized he was projecting a shared currency. Sounds like short term stability, long term disaster.

As I said in the comments, I doubt the survival of a Canada-Quebec union even if secession occurred without any complications, emotional or otherwise.

OTOH there's the Commonwealth as an older model. One which reached a point of pretty much no shared governance but it was gradual. And Scotland's making "share the pound" noises, though I think they shouldn't.

Recent developments sure would make me leery of shared currencies, at least between countries without completely unrestricted movement of labor and goods.
