The HMV at Yonge and Dundas, has seen better days. Evan Davies' oral history, published in The Grid in August of last year, gives an idea as to how exciting a store it was at its prime--well-stocked, well-organized--before a combination of ill-judged corporate policies and the growth of downloads of all legalities gutted it. When the HMV Store opened, a friend of mine became the manager / a manager (I'm not sure which) of the classics section. At that time the staff knowledge was excellent and the selection was also very good. The standards began to drop within a few years, though (the friend moved on to EMI Canada as the classical marketing manager) and the section is now an afterthought dominated by Naxos.

It's still a little better than the "typical" HMV, but not much better.

Indeed! That and Glad Day is one of the notable successes for indie book-ish sellers in downtown Toronto.
