It has become increasingly clear we are so very, very lucky we didn't fight a war in the 1980s when world arsenals were at their peaks. This is bad enough.

This actually isn't a new idea - indeed, the whole study of "nuclear winter" begat studies in global cooling, which in turn begat the global warming studies. And now we've come full circle, with some scientists apparently arguing that we need a nuclear war to offset global warming. I'm sorry, I mean climate change.
