The black tie event was something that had Cal sending a note to his mother to please ship him his suit. She did, of course. With it came an extra invite for Cal's boyfriend that she somehow knew about. Cal really didn't want to know how she knew, but she did ( Read more... )

A society gathering, and with an invitation no less, Orrick wouldn't have missed it for the world. He knew a few people here and there, everyone courteous if occasionally wary. He was his bubbly-sharp self, like daggers in the stuffing of an elegantly dressed pillow. When he breezed up to Cal, he felt like he was glowing. "Well, Caledon, this is quite a party, isn't it?"

Cal arched a brow, smile daring at the blonde. Orrick. He had to force himself to remember that name, particularly since he was supposed to be his date, his lover. The right hand of the eventual boss.Orrick was drawing as much attention as Caledon did. He hardly doubted that they were trying to get as much info as they could about when Caledon would come to take his place at the head of their table, in the office set aside for him, if there was anything they could do to get him to come sooner.

Caledon hardly knew what they were seeing, but he wanted to stay in Kin for a while longer, wanted to stay with Emrys. He wasn't ready for that office yet.

He didn't think he ever would be.

"Standard fare, my dear, I assure you," Caledon said smoothly, smiling at a young woman as she passed by before his attention went back to his date. "Do you happen to know why my mother's trying to kill you with her eyes?"

"Is she?" Orrick didn't go so far as to bat his eyelashes, but the subtle lift of his grin said he was hardly surprised. "She likely thinks that I'm too old for you. Mothers can be so ... protective."

Caledon didn't think that comment was worth the effort to respond to. The board wouldn't care if his mother disapproved, but they would care if she had legitimate reasons for it. He made a note to talk to her later, and another to be seen somewhere else with Orrick just to make it look like he ended a relationship because his mother didn't like him. Nobody wanted to see that kind of weakness in a grown man.

He caught his reflection in the polished silver frame of a painting, noting the subtle bleed of gold starting into his eyes just around the pupils.

"Perhaps we should free her of the sight of us then?" he suggested, discarding his drink lightly onto the tray of a passing waiter.
