I have no idea if I'm going to be able to use the Internet very often while I'm way, so HAPPY FREAKIN' HOLIDAYSThough, truthfully, I'm starting to dislike the phrase 'Happy Holidays' because you only use it this time of year. So you're really only talking about Hanukkah (which has different dates), Christmas, and Kwanzaa (maybe), which defeats the ( Read more... )

...i thought people said "happy holidays" because of christmas/hannukah/kwanzaa AND new year's... like, the end of the year is a kind of blitzkrieg on holidays so we just sum it up instead of listing each one.

Nope. At least in my experience, people tend to say "Happy Holidays AND (a) Happy New Year", since you can't really offend anyone with the change of the calendar. That's why I didn't include it.

I always thought that too, especially since Thanksgiving is considered the begining of the "Holiday Season". I thought it just included everything from Thanksgiving to New Years.

You're kind of equating the sentiment that I don't like the phrase "Happy Holidays" with not liking or understanding the need for holidays, especially winter ones, which couldn't be further from the truth. I love me some Christmas, despite being an atheist. I know that I'm culturally Christian. (Though if anyone around me we celebrating something else like Festivus or Kwanzaa, I wouldn't dirride them. I'd want to be there.)

The reason I said that is because even though the phrase is supposed to be all-inclusive, it's not used that way, no matter what we tell ourselves. People have holidays all year, and we differentiate thoae. So "Happy Holidays" is just a pretense, really, for being "cool and fair".

"Season's Greetings" is a little bit better in that regard, but...not much if we still only use it at one time of the year. Not eliminating holidays--I'm a social creature, myself.

EDIT: Ugh, so many typos. I has the laptop at an awkward position before and couldn't type.
