[Boring Character Study or Silly Action Fest]

From the article: "Happy medium, please. Happy glorious, interesting and exciting medium.

It's not too much to ask."

Actually, in a way is is quite a bit to ask.

I'm not saying this person is unreasonable or wrong. A good story DOES have a happy medium, I'm painfully aware of this. I'm just not ( Read more... )

Happy glorious, interesting and exciting medium.is it just me or does that sound like a contradiction of terms? it goes without saying that every moment you spend fleshing out a character is a moment not spent in heart-pounding action, and while it's obvious that a story that tries to be ALL ACTION ALL THE TIME is going to wear the reader and itself out in short order, a story that takes its time creating complex characters is going to be lean in the "thrilling action" department. a "happy medium" is by definition not "glorious and exciting" because it's a compromise - you sacrifice some excitement for characters that are 3-dimensional ( ... )

is it just me or does that sound like a contradiction of terms?No, not really. He's not saying that as a compromise you need to cut everything out of both, but to find a way for it to be interesting AND exciting to read about ( ... )

i would consider anything an interesting situation that would make the character say "...well THAT'S new." or something that you can put "suddenly" in front of. visually, in my head, it's like "the plot falls out of the sky." you could even take that literally if you just want an excuse to write about your characters going "O.O WTF."
