I want to be able to trill my Rs. Goddamn it.

In fact, since learning Japanese a while ago, I sometimes have trouble with the English R. WTF, I say.

Agh. I don't understand it.

i've heard that the ability to roll one's Rs is genetic and/or learned. some people say you just have to have a genetic predisposition for it, and some say it depends on the phonemes you learn when you're first learning to talk. i can do it, but i have no idea why or when i learned, and trying to tell people how doesn't seem to work.

i have to adopt an entirely different voice for speaking another language. making my mouth form the words correctly actually changes the pitch and volume of my voice. it's weird. it also causes problems because it sounds weird when i try to throw french/japanese words into the middle of an english sentence. I am under the impression that it's the capacity to learn language that is innate in all humans, but there's a threshold to learn it properly (as in learn a first language), and the same would go for trilling. After a certain age, it's much, much, much harder to learn. So...boo for the fact that I'm old. :p

If it makes you feel better, I can't roll R's either and I can't do that thing where you fold your tongue :(!
