The current lineup of Alice in Chains is quite good. I saw them a few years ago before there was any talk of a new album. The new singer is a friend of the band's from way back. His band toured with Cantrell when he was doing his solo thing. The chemistry between the new guy and the original three members is real and genuine. He is not just some hired gun, and he admirably fills lead vocal duties without trying to sound like he's trying to be Layne. (Physically, he couldn't be more different.) I was impressed, and was not surprised at all when a new album was announced.
