The New York Times has always sneered at SF and probably will continue to do so until they finally die in a fire after the bankruptcy. You should spend your time and money on a more deserving newspaper like the Weekly World News, National Enquirer, or Star-Tribune. Seriously.

Well I don't really spend any money on them, so it's no skin off my back either way. But chances are next time I see this writer's name attached to any article I will simply move on rather than give them the revenue in page views. That is for certain.

Did you send this to the Times? I think it's an opinion they should hear.

The funny thing is, all the recommendations I've gotten for Game of Thrones have been from...*GASPIES*...women. And none of it has been for the sex. As the first book is still sitting here unread as of yet, I have no idea how the sexual attitudes of the show compare to the book. But all the recs I've gotten have been along the lines of "No really - plot like whoa. Characters like holycow. Writing of awesome." Y'know, like we're intelligent human beings who enjoy well-crafted worlds.

But I think that's this person's actual problem - she has no interest in anything that's outside the realm of "normal." I've sadly known too many other people like her. If it isn't "real" then it should be derided as something that actual SERIOUS GROWNUPS shouldn't consider. Case in point - her determined cracks at the D&D crowd. Very mature. I suppose that's all fine if that's how her taste runs, but she shouldn't be allowed to review the genre then.

Yes! Exactly. And the books were recommended to me by a female friend as well. That seems to be the experience of many of the fangirls speaking up about this article too.

That's one of my big problems with her. She hasn't even given the story or the characters a chance. It's been entirely written off due to the genre alone.

Now I feel like I need to read the books just to spite her. I mean, they're on my list anyways. And I'm feeling spiteful tonight.

I think I agree with wombat_socho on the weight that should be assigned to NYT reporting. If I wanted an opinion about Game of Thrones, I would go to i09, tor.com, HBO's site, or I'd ask my friends what they had heard. If I wanted to know what Dick Cheney thought should be printed in the paper, I'd read the fucking Times.

It's not even anomalous that they ran an article by a journalist that wasn't really qualified to report on the subject. I assure you, even NYT subscribers don't take this article seriously. It's a fluff piece in a fluff newspaper.

Man, why haters gotta hate? And why's the Times gotta press 'em into service writing about the stuff they're gonna hate? :-/
