I learned a while back to not doubt Robert Downey Jr, so I'm going in with an open mind. I think the interplay between Downey Jr and Jude Law will be priceless. Plus I'm a fan of Guy Ritchie, who's made some very entertaining films, such as Snatch and Rock N' Rolla.

That said, a lot of what they are showing Holmes doing in the trailers can be traced back to the original books and stories. That said, I think the trailers are being done in a way to make the film appeal to people who may not really be into Sherlock Holmes, or at least the traditional representation...

I'm also looking forward to Rachel McAdams, who I quite like.

And yes, trailers can be deceptive so final judgment will be reserved for the actual movie.

I also really hope they are just highlighting and ass-kicking, because they know that people who love sherlock for his BRAIN will still show up anyway, and they need to draw in people like my dad.

though with the slashiness in the trailers, I don't know who that is aimed at. Slashers would find it anyway. ;-)

You're an English major? ME TOO! I actually had no idea you were, lol :)

Oh yeah, Holmes/Watson forever, no doubt.

Hells yes I am! :)

Before I knew what slash even was I knew they were getting it on. Those kinky Victorians.

The film looks so horrifically *wrong* -- but it looks like it could also be awesome and fun and I want to see it as soon as I can.

>But any adaptation/reimagining/whatever doesn't
>change anything about the originals unless I want
>to let it do so.

I'm no longer surprised how many people don't feel that way.

[I just suggested that it might be worth putting Sherlock Holmes on the CVG potential panel list.]

Personally, if you can't see past the "canon" of any particular story, I think you're missing out on a whole lot. Retellings let you look at a different aspect of the story or take a different angle. Not all of them are good, but even when they're bad you're not required to take them as your own personal canon.

Oh my gosh, YES. PANEL. I will so very be on that.

The trailer scares me, too actiony. But you make a good arguement for the movie, so I think I can keep an open mind too. If nothing else, I'm sure the movie will cause a nice little fandom explosion that you can loot fic, art and such from, even if the movie itself isn't so great.

Plus at least it'll be pretty. I am very happy with the actor choices ^_^

Well, it is a Guy Ritchie movie. If there weren't a ridiculous amount of action then it would have been directed by someone else. :)

The pretty is exploding off the screen already. I haven't seen this combination of hotness in one movie since the Pirates movies came out.

i agree with you totally. i will be really disappointed if the "they've been flirting like this for hours" line is secretly not about holmes/watson.

i am wondering if i should reread some holmes before the movie. i know with the LOTR movies, i was much happier when i hadn't read the source recently...

i don't think i have ever been so sure in advance that a fandom would be AWESOME as I am with this.

That would be so very cheap if they took that line away. But having seen Rock N' Rolla and going by the rest of the trailer, I don't think Guy Ritchie is going to shy away from the homoerotic subtext. (Thank goodness)

Personally, I'm too excited for the movie not to do some re-reading before then. If you're into audiobooks, I discovered just last night that LibriVox has quite a few of them up for free download since they're in the public domain.

I agree 100%, this knowing the fandom is going to be amazing before the source even hits is a new one on me. I'm thoroughly enjoying it, although the anticipation is killing me! :)

oooh, i am quite the fan of audiobooks! *yoink*

I am hoping to try and get my family to go on christmas or day after. And... If they pick up on the gay I will die of laughter.

This is basically the best christmas ever, with my first time in yuletide, Doctor Who that I am very much looking forward to, AND holmes/watson slash on the big screen. who needs physical presents??? :-D

Oh my there is a lot at librivox, what are *your* favorite stories?

I'm starting with Hound of the Baskervilles and the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes collection myself. Once I finish those up I'll probably start over chronologically with a Study in Scarlet.

This IS going to be a really great Christmas, isn't it? :D
