Shiny New Anime

Jan 27, 2007 17:32

Today I've been working on AD stuff, as always, but also doing some research for the Shiny New Anime panel at the same time. In case you weren't at AD last year, takuansoho, belindabird, and myself hosted a panel to tell the noobs who rarely catch anything outside of Cartoon Network about some of the brand spanking new titles were out there, awesome, and prepped for ( Read more... )

Hopefully I'll be off-duty and be able to check out the panel. Nodame Canabile sounds interesting, and I always like a show with a good soundtrack. You can generally tell the how quality of animation is right away by how well they do the small details. As much as anything else, I'm in this for the artwork.

The animation and art itself is pretty good, but not overly amazing in that "we are so well-funded" way. I'm just impressed they went the extra mile to animate the playing of the music rather than save the money and to the pan and scan crap that tends to cheapen the music.

I'm looking forward to seeing it. It's always much better when the music and the animation actually match. When I first watched Macross after having seen the Robotech version for many years beforehand it was a new experience for me because the animation actually went with the songs being performed.

BTW do you ever get the chance to keep up your skills on the piano?

Apartment living doesn't really pave the way for owning a piano, so I really haven't touched one since I graduated from high school back in the day.

I just today DLed the two eps of Nodame Cantabile and now I can't wait to check it out. Also everything else, except for maybe D. Gray Man because it looked kind of goony from those pics.

I hope the rest of the episodes, whenever they appear, are as good as the first two. And yeah, I don't think that D.Gray-man would be your cup of tea.

I've been reading the licensed Nodame manga, and it's good to hear that the anime conversion seems to be going well. (I'm lazy, so I never get around to obtaining things immediately ... which is why I'm not recommending anything, because my word is only as good as hearsay on /a/, and that's probably pretty awful.)

Sadly I have no basis of comparison, but I may have to run out and get myself some of the manga at this rate.

Sadly, I'm at work most of the time and I can't see most anime. Not even Gintama anymore. (although I can see Bleach, thank you no-OT-on-Wednesdays rule) I've wanted to check D.Gray Man out so bad, but I've only seen one episode.

P.S. I mark for Lenalee. xD

Oh yeah, I watch Ayakashi Ayashi, but really I've only been watching it because it has great OP/EDs. But it's animated by Bones, and it does have a very Cowboy Bebop-ish feel to it. (well, as much as it can while still mainly sticking true to the feudal Japan era. XD;)

I will vouch that Ayakashi Ayashi is quite good. The opening and endings are catchy and the stories themselves are very well done. I actually really liked how they work the series, which is that everything is told in 3-4 episode archs and the stories don't have much to do with each other, they're completely contained. But it doesn't stop after each episode, so there's more time to explore the story.

I highly recommend watching the whole series and I definintly think you could talk about this one Jo, just maybe as a side one for people who like the horror type anime that's so rare (or I could be biased ^_^)

Is it licensed? I didn't see it over at animesuki.

Hey, I hear there's this new series called Naruto, and it's supposed to be really cool. How come it's not on the panel? JUST KIDDING.

Seriously, though - and this is actually something I'm going to take up with tokenfanboy as well - any possibility of Yawara! pimpage?

Being that Yawara is from the early 90s mostly, it's not really what we're looking for. There could always be an "anime you might have missed..." panel where that would be more appropriate. This panel is mostly for stuff from the previous year though and maybe a couple years before that. Nothing wrong with the show, just not really the point of the panel.

OK. I thought I'd ask since the series hasn't been licensed before and is probably new to most of the fans who got acquainted with the medium only in the last few years.

I'm having Aaron check with AnimEigo to see if Yawara will be available for the Video Rooms in time for Detour. I didn't see it listed on AOD's anime checklist though, so I wouldn't get your hopes raised up too much.
