Yep, some of us still read (and write in) LJ. I can't imagine not driving for years, but I've never lived in a place with a decent transit system. I'm teaching my 19-year-old son to drive and he avoids it whenever he can.

Was it a boarding school?
Don't get me wrong--I failed my driver's ed behind the wheel exam for missing a stop sign, so I was going to have to retake the road test at the DMV, and that was also a turnoff. But my entire high school life was circumscribed by campus boundaries, 24x7. That played a big part. Had I still been living in the suburban sprawl I grew up in, I would've needed it enough to follow through. Since then, it's pretty much been a series of circumstances where it'd be useful, but not useful enough to be worth the bother. Moving to the edge of town has shown me some of the possibilities having a car could unleash for me. I'm still not sure it'll be worth the bother in the long run for me, but I ain't doing much else right now, so why not.
