Hey, I wonder if you could help me with a little research. I’ve a character who is trying to pull off a con job, one that his little website is central to. He needs to find a web hosting company that isn’t going to pay too much attention to what he’s up to, or doesn’t give a good god damn anyway. He figures to find sites that are similar to what he is doing, or try and find who is hosting some of the porn sites that are out there. He’s going to run into some of the same problems when he tries to get setup to accept credit cards.
So, the questions. How do you find out what company is hosting a given website, and how does one get setup with pay pal, or cyber cash, or one of those?
While I’m hovering around the subject, I could use an author’s website for little old me, something like brotherbrad.com. Can you hook me up or what?
to find out who hosts a particular website you can usually just run it through "whois" http://www.internic.net/whois.html that will give you the the name server.. dns1.blahblah.com .. when doing whois searches just remember to not include the "www."
as for brotherbrad.com - sure - how much space and bandwidth are you looking for?
You always ask me questions, like I’m supposed to know what the hell I’m doing or something like that.
Well, I’m an obscure, as yet unpublished, if (talented?) writer who wants a site on which he can post a few stories, link to his blog, put up a game or two I created, and pretend the rest of the world might actually give a damn.
What was that standard small business package? I can’t imagine I need more than that, and if I do, it will be a pleasant little problem to solve. I don’t have my domain name yet either, should I go some where to handle that, or would you rather do it at the same time you set me up?
I’m hoping for sooner rather than later; unlike my band, I actually have the money at the moment.
yeah i could do a basic small business plan for $3.99 per month, plus the $5.00 for the Domain registration. it'd be 52.88 per year...
(although keep in mind that Domain names have to be purchesed for two years at first and then can be renewed annually... meaning that the whole sheband costs 57.88 this year, then 47.88 the year after that, then 52.88 from then on.)
you can jump over to the temp site here and place your order.. its all automated and what have you, I just havent gotten around to setting up my own domain for it yet... so we're still running it off of my buddy's half of the server :p
