A date is a day of month specified by its number.
A date is also the time during which something lasts.
Or... an engagement to go out with another person, often out of romantic interest, and socialize.

The last appears to be the most appropriate.

Not exactly...sometimes two people who are just friends can go out but it's not a date. Well not exactly....although technically it might be... [Now she's getting confused too.]

It's more like when two people who are attracted to each other romantically try to get to know each other. Like a girlfriend and boyfriend. Then people say they're "dating."
