Just a brief informal survey to help me decide something about my thesis research. This won't be quoted in my paper.

I'm with theban_voice - it's a restaurant if it serves some kind of food that's ready to eat and has at least some space for sitting and eating that's associated with the establishment. (Food courts count because it's associated, park benches near hot dog stands don't.) I'd count coffeeshops if they sell sandwiches and the like, but not if they only have cookies and muffins. Likewise, delis count if they'll make you a sandwich or soup or whatnot and have a table or two, but not if they only do cuts of meat/cheese to take home with you.

I would say almost any place that serves you at your table and gives you a bill afterwards counts as a restaurant.

everyone here is wrong, food carts in portland are restaurants even if they don't have seating, likewise sandwich shops that are too busy to have seating are restaurants
