Yes, I did wonder about the exact same thing. What did they want to prove by that move? Laws do not apply to the British? However, if there was indeed the danger of handing those two soldiers over to some weird warlord, that does make it look a bit different. In that case though, the British should have waited until their comrades were out of that prison and actually in the hands of whatever warlord or militia that was threatening to kill them.

Exactly. Local law never applies to occupying forces. Which is the best way to prevent any sort of trust from ever growing.
