The only reason is indemnity

People tend to forget that a corporation is nothing but a large collection of people, started by a person with a good idea and a lot of hard work. If a corporation provides a valuable service at a reasonable price, using responsible business practices and fair employee policies, then where is the evil?

This was recently read by myself and I had ( Read more... )

I think the mob = foolish is over simplified. I read about a study in which they found that if you put a 100 people in a room with a test about making choices, the majority of people (but not always the same majority) will get the choose the right answer. However, if the 100 people are exposed to a charismatic speaker, then they can be swayed away from the right answers by group dynamics.

I agree. Many things are oversimplified. When it comes to people, prediction of group dynamics can become as difficult as weather forecasting. While it is true that many people will default into a 'herd' behavior, it is important to remember that many to do not surrender their individuality while doing so. This keeps us as a species from becoming lemming like in any given situation. One Captain can extol the company 'over the wall' but not if their are two Sargents refuse a useless suicide mission.

I think the overriding emotion that makes all the difference is fear. We will not chose to do the right thing if we too afraid to do so.

Mob + Fear = Foolish
Mob + Panic = Death

I guess there is a corollary to this; Anger. The angry mob is easy to hold up as evidence of foolishness. However, Anger is often an extension of fear. We combat our own fears with anger, anger at ourselves for being afraid, anger at the thing that makes us afraid even when we're afraid that we won't get what we want. By the time we're grown we don't even associate the fear with the anger any more. We don't recognize our fear of injustice, our fear of unfairness, our fear of rejection. We don't think we're afraid of the things that make us angry but we are. We're afraid we will loose because we are wrong.

Over the last few million years we have evolved to associate loss due to mistake with death. It's hard to replace millions of years of evolution with a few thousand years of civilization.
