We went to see the movie Friday night. It was good, I thought. I also liked Tauriel though the healing sequence went on just a *little* too long for my taste. ;) S loved the Smaug voice.
And ARRGH, the spiders! I was getting a little dizzy by the time the sequence ended... and eww, yuck.
I have no idea how to pronounce "Smaug". I would have said "smog", but Denny's said it differently in their commercial (as did the actors in the movie). ;)
Please ignore some of my last e-mail to you, by the way! I was just a little nervous about things and wanted to make sure that you were doing okay.
Yeah, the only noises that I've heard that spiders make are hissing and grunting. Definitely not roaring. Come to think of it, that might have been part of why that scene bothered me a bit.
I like Tauriel, too. Although part of me stupidly can't help wishing for a movie which is just Gandalf, Radagast, and Saruman staging a commando raid on Dol Guldur. Because if you're going to make shit up, why not go all the way?
I think if you study the pronunciation guide in one of the appendices of LotR, it's pretty clear that Tolkien intended Smaug to be pronounced "SmOWgh", but an entire generation of us did grow up calling him "Smog". Tolkien did etymologically derive the name in part from the archaic German word for "smoke", so the pollution references weren't really off the mark.
Ahaha, yes, I would watch just a wizards movie, especially with that amazing plotline. I did think Gandalf got more than a little chumped out in this one. :p
Cool on the pronunciation bit--I figured it was a to-may-to, to-mah-to issue, but it's nice to know my Dad wasn't the only one.

I always said "Smog", but I do remember in the old Rankin Bass cartoon film they pronounced it "Smawg."
