Star Trek Into Darkness (Spoilers)

I thought that Star Trek Into Darkness was pretty damned entertaining, and I'm just sad that I couldn't go with a giant group of friends to squee over it. ( Spoilery, happy things! )

Sorry to the regard I contributed with the fan-poisoning. I should clarify that I have nothing against the idea of reboots or alternate versions. And if lots of other folks enjoy this movie, that's terrific. But the advance news and spoilers made it clear that I wouldn't be able to enjoy this movie unless all the characters were renamed, because I can't stop myself from having a clear vision of the Trekverse that's pretty opposed to what Abrams finds interesting about it.

There's a whole separate argument about why people think that the "spirit of Trek" that must be honored and invoked is the series that lasted barely 3 seasons and got abysmal ratings as opposed to either of the series that lasted 7 full seasons with great rating and syndications or the one after that which lasted 6 seasons with mediocre ratings. Television has actually gotten A Lot Better in the last 50 years.

The final straw for me was Slate running three or four articles on Thursday, each one slamming a different aspect of the movie. Perhaps Jbrams went over to the EIC's house and spit in his cornflakes??

Anyway, I just think you're missing out. The Star Trek boat is big enough to hold a lot of stories and ideas in it, and this one was surprisingly good in some places. I would like to discuss the good parts with you.

I am very glad that you all enjoyed the movie. I do feel like it was better than the first movie in this series.

I still don't know why we had to have Carol Wallace-Marcus nursing a broken kneecap/leg instead of being more of a fighter during the fight on the non-Enterprise bridge. (Hello, you are a weapons expert -- I know that you can at least throw something at the bad guy who just murdered your father!) Couldn't we have had something cool out of her at that point? It feels like a missed opportunity.

I agree that the sets/scenery/design and spectacle were really cool. :)

I did like Uhura's negotiation sequence. I wish that there had been more of that and less of the lovers' issues through the whole thing.

We saw it in 2D, but that's really a personal preference for me. I find the 3D glasses to be really distracting and I spent most of Iron Man 3 trying to get them into a good position on my nose so that I could see what was going on. Some of that is my personal eye troubles, though.

That kneecapping bit really bothered me. I couldn't even really see what had happened and then she screamed like that, and I must have shut my eyes, because the next thing I know, something else was happening and I only sorted out the fight scene later in conversation with other fen. I think this was poor editing on the movie's part, though, not some major failing on the story's part. I really would have liked to see her hold him off, or do something more. :(

I did not like how the 3D glasses fight, either! I don't think I'll be seeing a 3D movie again for a while, either. :(
