isn't it like a relation`ship? please enlighten me!
people always talk about shipping this couple or that one in my veronica mars community and i only kind of half feel like i know what they're all talking about.
you are correct, my friend. 'ship' comes from a cropping of the word 'relationship.' so a ship is a couple that you like/support/whatever.
in harry potter (rumor has it that's where the term began?) people are CRAZY about their 'ships. like, violent fights break out. i haven't paid much attention since i finished the last book, but i'm sure there was a lot of gloating and hurt feelings after half blood prince made certain ships canon, and other ships really not canon (or at least, less likely to ever become canon).
also, in harry potter, people name their ships. so if you ship hermione/draco you sail on the s.s. leather and libraries, draco/ginny is the s.s. fire and ice. there are so many more, but one of my favorite dumb ship names is for if you ship luna and neville--you sail on the s.s. the government stole my toad.
I love the naming of ships. I think I first saw that sort of action in the Buffy community, though--not that I ever read any of it, but I'm all about Spuffy ;)
hey wait man! i know what a ship is! and i'm one of your friends! ;)
but that's kind of a given, as i'm writing harry potter fic as we speak.
my preferred ship? sirius and a really good original female character ;) unfortuantely, there's not much of that out there. i've only found two good ones so far.
A lot of the ships in the hp community just confuse me. Draco and Hermione? What the fuck? I think it's pretty much the Draco related ships.. Oh and anything slash. I respect people's imaginations and the freedom they have within this fandom, but mostly I say wtf. To each her own.
My favorite ship, as most everyone knows, is Ron/Hermione. Followed closely behind is Harry/Ginny. All canon now (Ron/Hermione has always been... at least for me). I don't know how I feel about Tonks/Sirius quite yet, either. I don't know if it was completely necessary to the plot... But who knows how that will benefit or hinder book 7.
Do mine eyes deceive me? I thought I just read about someone finding Unforgivable oddly disturbing and sexy, and it doesn't get much more Draco-y than that! I literally erased that rec from my memories fifteen times before I decided that it might not just be me who is oddly compelled by the story. I cringed again and again, but the writing was good enough to merit linking. (And the sex was hot, even if Gloria Steinem is probably planning to firebomb the author's house as I type.)
I like all the cannon ships, too, but if I wanted to read about them I'd go for the actual books. Fanfic should be reserved for the twisted and wrong, ala Draco/any character who is not actually a snake. ;)
It WAS oddly disturbing and sexy. Like, god dammit. I don't get it. It's Draco! UGH!
Anyway, yes. Fan fic is awesome because people get to explore certain aspects of the fandom and put things together that really aren't true. I think that's what I love about it. People seriously take their ships to crazy levels though. :)

In HP, however, I sail the H.M.S. Wolfstar.
