I note the web is again awash in articles complaining about Valentine's Day.  Some of them decry the materialist component of it, i.e., an excuse to sell cards, flowers, jewelry, etc., in larger quantities than they might at any other time beside Christmas

You're missing the whole point. In this day and age, it is imperative for people who are *not* with whatever in-crowd to make certain said crowd is dissolved, abolished, destroyed and made to feel like the human debris that they are. Why, just ask the athiests filing lawsuits so that a plaque that was hung 60 years ago MUST COME DOWN NOW!!!!!! ;-D
