horizonssing Jack walks slowly up the long drive, boots crunching loudly on the loose gravel. Ianto seems unaware of anything around him, leaning back against the brickwork staring up into the sky. As he nears Ianto jumps and straightens up, instinctively tugging at his jacket and reaching for his tie before his brain appears to catch up and he stills, mask slipping for a moment and he looks so lost…
“Hey,” Jack calls, tone deliberately light, “did she like the flowers? Hope she’s not too mad at you, need me to go work the old Harkness charm?”
He comes to a stop and Ianto looks up at him. There are more shadows than usual in his eyes.
“She doesn’t remember, Jack.” He says softly, “Doesn’t know who I am let alone that I missed her birthday because of ill-timed rift activity. She thought I was my uncle, kept asking when Tad was coming to take her home.”
Ianto’s voice breaks slightly on that last sentence and Jack can see him all but trembling with the effort of holding himself together. He steps forwards, pulls Ianto into his arms. “Come on,” he whispers, “let’s get you home.”
