What if it's part of one of the endless series of offworld ceremonies they have to go through? If they'd been through enough of them, they wouldn't think twice about it. Only there's real mysticism or a sneaky Ancient device or something, and whammo! Mated for life! (Mating doesn't have to necessarily mean sex, right? Just...lifemates? Or whatever?)
