~FST: Ladies everywhere! with their clothes on!

Sep 21, 2010 03:33

delcat asked me to put together an FST of all the songs I've drawn them to/been inspired by whatever AND WHY NOT IT SOUNDS LIKE FUN

I bet this'll run longer than one CD and I'm not doing cover art (well, not exactly) or whatever I'm not that hardcore about these things. Also my inspiration comes from odd places at times and my taste in music is all over the place, so I imagine if you actually listen to these in the order I listed them then you'll get some crazy mood whiplash here and there. BUT IF YOU'D LIKE A LOT OF STRANGE MUSIC WELL

COME ON DOWN

I'll split this up into sections cause, why not.

PRE-INFECTION
Before these poor saps became zombies.

1. Freezepop - Swimming Pool
the stars were bright, the water clear
i felt your heat as you swam near
i held my breath, you held my hand
moving away, further from land
the moon was full, everything blue
the water stilled, reflecting you
floating right here with you next to me
gazing at stars, we drift silently

late at nite, the air was cool
we snuck into the swimming pool
i went under and you followed
let's not think about tomorrow

everything is perfect now

Haha an early song for them, and one that still reminds me of them a lot. 8D Inspired this picture (and this one) and also this fic. Calm and pleasant times before the infection broke out, although the "i went under and you followed" part can apply to how Hunter infected Smoker later, if you want to add a melancholy air to this.

2. Kate Havnevik - Nowhere Warm
I go nowhere high
Go nowhere warm
Until you’re by my side
Your hand in mine
And I’ve always known
You’re like a feather
You go where wind and fire melt together

And I’m sure you’re on your way
Yes I’m sure you’re on the road

Very strongly associated with this fic I wrote for them, where Hunter disappears. There's a sort of melancholy feeling to me for this that can work with various scenarios... Charger waiting for David, Jockey looking for her friends, things like that. But the strongest is the fic that went with the song.
But I also did this for it.

3. Scooter - Suavemente
Whenever people agree with me
I always feel I must be wrong

A song I was listening to a lot while coming up with them, so I ended up associating it with them for some reason, haha. Drew this for it.

4. Mother - Bein' Friends
When you are happy with laughter to spare,
Fun is twice as fun with someone to share.
When you are lonely and full of despair
Things aren't half as bad when somebody cares.

Maybe now you have figured it out,
That's what bein' a friend is about.

When you're lookin' for a shoulder you can cry on,
(Won't you think about me?)
When you're lookin' for someone you can rely on,
(Don't you ever doubt me!)

I'll be there someway somehow,
That's what bein' friends is about!

And if you ask me, you know that it's true;
There is not a thing that I will not do!
I'll follow you to the ends of the earth,
That's how much I think our friendship is worth!

Just cuteness about Hunter and Smoker's friendship. :B Went with this picture.

5. Pirates of the Sea - Wolves of the Sea
With a hi hi ho and a hi hi hey, we're bound to be close to the sea!
Our Captain will stand on the bridge and sing, pirates are all we can be!

One of the first songs associated with them for me, thanks to this comic.

6. The Pirates of Penzance - I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General
I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.

A very early song for them that solidified Smoker's love for musicals in my mind. Goes with this comic.

7. Stephen Lynch - Tall Glass o' Water
She's a tall glass o' water
She's a sip o' lemonade
She's a cup of hot Darjeeling tea
She's a cold Tang in the shade

She's an oatmeal cookie
She's a crumb of Melba toast
She's the cream in an Oreo
That's the part that I like the most

True story, but this comic still makes me laugh every time. Hunter's subtle attempts to tell her how much she likes her, in a way.

8. DATEKEN - Namae no nai Uta
All alone in my room
Gazing at the setting sun
Suddenly I'm stricken with loneliness
So I hum a melody

That nameless song
Gently fills my heart
There are no words for anyone to hear
It's a song all my own

What was behind this picture. Just them at night together, Smoker just plunking away and humming to herself in the dark. It's a weird mental image. :B

9. Freezepop - That Boy is All About Fun!
he knows how to live it up
center of the social scene
no way you can keep it up
all night fun is what I mean
doesn't stay in one place long
there's too much he has to do
5 a.m. he's going strong
on the prowl for something new

A quick pronoun swap makes this a preinfected Hunter type song for me. Like so.

10. The Chipmunks & Chipettes - The Girls of Rock 'n Roll
Sun goes down, I'm just getting up
I'm heading for the city lights
Radio blasting all the way to the club
Gonna rock this town tonight

You're living in a man's world, they tell us
But we ain't gonna buy it
The things they're tryin to sell us now

Hunter tormented Smoker with this song here.

11. The Lonely Island - Boombox (ft. Julian Casablancas)
The Big Apple, where people never dance
Spirits go down while profits expand
The cops or the dealers, who's got the juice
The street vendors peddling their boiled goose

So many types of people, they'll never get along
'til I bust out my boombox and play this song

The music washed away all their hate
And society started advancing
Every demographic was represented
It was a rainbow coalition of dancing

Ooooh, everyone was wearing fingerless gloves

Direct inspiration for this comic.

12. Sufjan Stevens - That Dress Looks Nice on You
I can see a lot of life in you.
I can see a lot of bright in you.
And I think the dress looks nice on you.
I can see a lot of life in you.

Something that goes along with this fic with Smoker going to the party, also drawn out here.

13. Enya - Amid the Falling Snow
How I remember sleepless nights
When we would read by candlelight,
And on the windowpane outside
A new world made of snow;

A million feathers falling down,
A million stars that touch the ground,
So many secrets to be found
Amid the falling snow.

Hunter and Smoker curled up together at night reading together during a blackout. I don't know why that image is so strong for me but what can you do. As illustrated here.

14. Freezepop - Stakeout
boys will come and boys will go
tell me something I don't know
I've seen you here before
I want to see you more and...

geechi reminded me of this song, and the line just stuck in my head and I ended up with this.

15. Ani DiFranco - Not a Pretty Girl
i am not a pretty girl
that is not what i do
i ain't no damsel in distress
and i don't need to be rescued
so put me down punk
maybe you'd prefer a maiden fair
isn't there a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

Bits of this remind me of Smoker, for obvious reasons I imagine. A little sketch of her with some lyrics to this will show up soon enough.

16. Ingrid Michaelson - Die Alone
I never thought I could love anyone but myself.
Now I know I can't love anyone but you.
You make me think that maybe I won't die alone.
Maybe I won't die alone.

What have I become?
Something soft and really quite dumb.
Because I've fallen, oh, 'cuz I've fall-fallen, oh 'cuz I've fall-fall-fallen
So far away from the place where I started from.

Someone on devart actually said this song reminded them of Hunter and Smoker and dang I can definitely see it. :O A sketch will probably show up related to this eventually.

17. Pendulum - Hold Your Colour
Ahhh, she looked into your eyes,
And saw what laid beneath,
Don't try to save yourself,
The circle is complete

This is, for me anyway, the pivotal song between pre and post infection for them, when Hunter gets bitten and bites Smoker in turn, and their human lives are over. This song was the original inspiration behind the long 12-page comic detailing how they both became infected, actually, and I still associate it heavily with their transition from human to zombie.

ZIP of the Preinfection songs

I actually forgot to include these two because they just occurred to me, but here have them anyway.

Dar Williams - Wilder than Her
Well I'm wilder than her, and what else can I say
But I guess that's why she fell in love with me
She's a house on fire, she's got all those charms
I'm a house on fire, too, but I got four alarms

And I'm wilder than her, and it drives her out of her mind
I guess she thought that she was just one of a kind
But she's a summer storm, and I'm a hurricane
One just blows through town, one blows the town away
And I'm wilder than her

But when she takes my hand and she looks me in the eye
I see something that I've never seen in my life
She takes the fire and turns it down low
She takes the night and makes it not so cold
She takes the distance and breaks it into miles
She makes my life just a little less wild

Fluffy stuff from Hunter's POV in my mind. I'M LAME I KNOW OKAY LEAVE ME ALONE

Jamie Anderson - Drive All Night
I like how the steering wheel is firm under my hand
I like how the headlights cut across the shadow land
I like how your voice is low and breathless in my ear
I like that it's cold outside but warm in here

Surrounded by this highway, we're at the speed of light
Baby, let's drive all night

I like how your features soften in the dashboard glow
I like how your body settles underneath your clothes
I like how the rumble of the wheels against the road
Quickens with my heart, I don't wanna drive slow

Surrounded by this highway, we're at the speed of light
Baby, let's drive all night

Your hand on my shoulder
Then slides up through my hair
We are rushing forward
I'll take you anywhere

The two of them driving through the desert at night to some place or another. FLUFFY IMAGES BASICALLY

POST-INFECTION
Running around biting people. A sad fate.

1. Shakira - She-Wolf
There's a she wolf in your closet
Open up and set her free
There's a she wolf in your closet
Let it out so it can breathe

Sitting across a bar, staring right at her prey
It's going well so far, she's gonna get her way
Nocturnal creatures are not so prudent
The moon's my teacher, and I'm her student

This has actually been my Hunter song for a long time, in fact even before I'd come up with pre-infection designs for them at all. I can always picture her jumping around to this, haha. I've never drawn anything for it though, but I still associate it pretty strongly with her as a zombie.

2. Girls' Generation - Run Devil Run
You're caught red handed, you provoked me
Run devil devil run run

For those sympathetic to the zombie cause, this is kind of their triumphant song for me. The four of them are killing people and taking names, and nothing's going to stand in their way, despite the odds. A sort of positive zombie song, if that makes sense? Or at least, one where things are finally going their way.
Can still sort of picture them stalking Griffin and Sparkles to this, haha. Drew this for it.

3. OneRepublic - All the Right Moves
I know things are looking up,
but soon they'll take us down
before anybody's knowing our name. They got

all the right friends in all the right places.
So yeah, we're going down. We've got
all the right moves and all the wrong faces.
So yeah, we're going down. They said,
everybody knows, everybody knows where we're going.
Yeah, we're going down.

It can be possible that rain can fall
only when it's over our heads.
The sun is shining everyday, but it's far away.
Over the world is death.

These two songs (All the Right Moves/Run Devil Run) kind of go together for me, in that one is a positive TAKE THAT kind of anthem, and this one is kind of the opposite. The four of them are disposable after all, replacable like every other zombie out there. And as anyone who played the game can tell you, you kill a lot of Special Infected by the end of a campaign.
They're just victims that no one will remember, monsters that are eventually doomed to be killed by survivors. The downside of being a zombie, as compared to Run Devil Run.
I have some fairly clear mental images to this as well, the four of them getting hit or knocked off or shot down, but I also drew this for it.

4. Chata - Dango Daikazoku
The friendly dumplings all hold hands and create a big round ring.
They build a town on the dumpling star, and everyone laughs together.
The rabbit waves from the big moon in the sky.
It rounds everything up - happy things and sad things too.

Where the icon for this community comes from, actually. My mental images for this one tend to vary, with the beginning being kind of cute and harmless, but it always seems to end the same way - with Hunter and Smoker near death, looking at each other, and for a few brief seconds, remembering what they used to be to each other. A final happy moment, in a way, before they both die.
An idea I'd revisit a few times, but this came from Dango Daikazoku, haha.

5. Spring Awakenings - Touch Me
Where I go, when i go there,
No more memory anymore-
Only men on distant ships,
The women with them, swimming with them, to shore...

Only the first verse, but the image it gave me was so strong that it stuck in my head enough to get me to try and draw it twice. "No more memory anymore" is what made it click for me, I think.
Standing in the ocean after the survivors have made their escape at sunset. I should really color this at some point, that might make it more clear.

6. HIIH - Feels Like Heaven
My heart has a dream of a different me
Someday I'll be separated from this meaningless body

Many of my thoughts and wishes
Don't end up working out but
I want to be on the road to my dear place
I believe in a new world

knackster was the one who made the connection between those two and this song for me, haha. Suffering zombies trying to remember their old life. Drew this here for it.

ZIP of the Postinfection songs

SURVIVORS
Ain't no zombie gonna break my stride.

1. katethegreat19 - Final Fantasy IX - You're Not Alone
Shout into the night
Show the darkness that you will fight
Hopeless you may feel,
but inside I know you are strong

More explicitly love-based lyrics aside, just a kind of determined anthem for them as they struggle along their way. Supporting and believing in each other, and using the strength they draw to keep going. IT'S VERY INSPIRING
I drew way too many shots to this here.

2. Rihanna - Rockstar 101
Rockin this skirt
Rockin this club
Got my middle finger up, I don't really give a fuck
Rockin these diamonds
I'm rockin this chain
Make sure you get a picture, I'm rockin my fame
To be what you is you gotta be what you are
The only thing I'm missing is a black guitar

Practically planned out a whole flash video to this with Hunter and Smoker as survivors, although I came up with it before Jockey and Charger came along. I might have to rework bits of it in my head to incorporate them, or maybe just have it be set before they met them, or something. Either way.
One scene is here (which someone on dev actually colored here :O!), just Smoker wreathed in flames. Another scene might make it into the flash vid I'm working on as we speak, haha.

3. The Scarlet Pimpernel - Into the Fire
You can tremble, you can fear it
But keep your fighting spirit alive boys
Let the shiver of it sting you
Fling into battle, spring to your feet boys
Never hold back your step for a moment
Never doubt that your courage will grow
Hold your head even higher and into the fire we go

Haha as detailed at the end of this entry, this kind of inspiring thing just reminds me of them all working together and refusing to go down. Smoker's inspirational thought for the day, haha. Although it also has a sadder counterpoint to it for me, when Jockey sings it when everyone's dead, that kind of thing. But I associate this with them so strongly now, haha.

4. The Radio - Whatever Gets You Through Today
Sometime yesterday,
There was another way
Of dreaming....

But there's another way
You don't have to be a hero....

God, it's not easy
There's a lot to keep you holding
On forever....

Whatever gets you through today

Relying on each other to get through the zombie apocalypse, and they keep each other's spirits up in their own ways, as well as keep themselves going their own ways. In the end, does it matter if everyone is really dead, as long as you're still alive? Whatever gets you through the day.
I drew this to it which is weird since it doesn't match what I was thinking of, haha.

5. Owl City - Fireflies
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep

Goes to this. :B

6. Mayhem - Eggs (Furries in a Blender Mix)
watch out be safe so
2 little eggs in the sun
one sleep too long goes boom boom
boom dubi dum

I haven't actually drawn anything to this yet, but I picture a very frantic, rapid flash video in my head to this, of them leaving a saferoom and making their way to the next area. Lots of cuts to their different specialties, that kind of thing.

7. Emiliana Torrini - Gollum's Song
Where once was light
Now darkness falls
Where once was love
Love is no more
Don't say goodbye
Don't say I didn't try

These tears we cry
Are falling rain
For all the lies you told us
The hurt, the blame...
And we will weep to be so alone
We are lost
We can never go home

I actually HAVE drawn a comic for this, which you'll see when I do my next sketchpost. But basically, Jockey sings a little piece of it when they find the Army/CEDA and are betrayed by them, and they no longer have a clear goal of where to go or who to go to for help. The realization that the people they'd been trusting to help them actually are either dead or want them dead hits Jockey hard, and the reality of it, that there is no way out and there's no way home, prompts a few stanzas of this. You'll see eventually.
Alternatively, could also apply if they find out about Carriers (people who carry the infection, but aren't zombies), assume that they ARE Carriers, and therefore can never return back to normal society without infecting everyone else. But now this is getting depressing.

8. Bif Naked - Lucky
It was on Monday when my lover told me
Never pay the reaper with love only
What could I say to you except
I love you
And I'd give my life for yours?

I know we are, we are the lucky ones

SurvivorHunter carries on after Smoker dies in some way or another, but she holds herself responsible for her death. The guilt just eats away at her endlessly, like so.

9. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - The Dead Flag Blues
The car's on fire, and there's no driver at the wheel.
And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides.
And a dark wind blows.
The government is corrupt, and we're on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn.

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death.

The sun has fallen down, and the billboards are all leering.
And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles.

It went like this.
The buildings tumbled in on themselves.
Mothers, clutching babies, picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair.

The skyline was beautiful on fire.
All twisted metal stretching upwards.
Everything washed in a thin orange haze.

I said, "Kiss me, you're beautiful.
"These are truly the last days"

You grabbed my hand, and we fell into it.
Like a daydream.
Or a fever.

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down.
For sure it's the valley of death.

I open up my wallet,
and it's full of blood.

The imagery in this is so evocative to me. The four survivors pick their way through a destroyed and decaying world, trying to stay alive. Inspired this large and fairly elaborate shot of them that I'd like to color some day, maybe.

10. The Music Man - Ya Got Trouble
Well, either you're closing your eyes
To a situation you do now wish to acknowledge
Or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated
By the presence of a pool table in your community.
Ya got trouble, my friend, right here,
I say, trouble right here in River City.
Why sure I'm a billiard player,
Certainly mighty proud I say
I'm always mighty proud to say it.
I consider that the hours I spend
With a cue in my hand are golden.
Help you cultivate horse sense
And a cool head and a keen eye.

One of the few times Smoker sings for her group, as shown here. I can picture her rattling this off and Hunter being so impressed, haha.

11. Groove Coverage - In My Dreams
And who can hear those tiny broken hearts
And what are we to be?
Where is home on the milky way of stars?
I dry my eyes again

In my dreams I am not so far away from home
What am I in a world so far away from home
All my life all the time so far away from home
Without you I will be so far away from home

If we could make it through the darkest night
We'd have a brighter day
The world I see beyond your pretty eyes
Makes me want to stay

I was thinking of doing something more in depth to this, but just ended up with these two depressing things - Charger wishing her life was back to normal and Jockey not quite sure what she's become.

12. Foreigner - Cold as Ice
You're as cold as ice
You're willing to sacrifice our love

You never take advice
Someday you'll pay the price, I know

Hunter and Jockey tormented Smoker with this here.

13. Mulan - Make a Man Out of You
Let's get down to business
To defeat the Huns
Did they send me daughters
When I asked for sons?
You're the saddest bunch
I ever met
But you can bet
Before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man
out of you

Jockey sang this to Smoker right here

Jockey also sings a lot of song snippets randomly, which are just any song I can think of that can tangentially relate to the conversation, so I'll just list them quickly here.

Weird Al Yankovic - Close but No Cigar
Be For U - Break Down!
Scotty D. - Drop the Bomb
The White Stripes - I Can Tell That We Are Going to Be Friends
Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground

ZIP of the Survivor songs

OTHER/MULTIPLE
Songs about them as zombies AND as humans at the same time!

1. Alstroemeria Records ft. nomico - Bad Apple!!
Even in the midst of flowing time,
Look, listlessness dances round and round.
I can't even see my heart,
As it withdraws from me, and I don't care.
Even if I don't make a move,
I keep being swept away through the cracks of time.
I don't give a damn about anything around me,
I am me, and that's all there is to it.

If I make a move, if I make a move,
I'll destroy it all, I'll destroy it all.
If I grieve, if I grieve,
Would my heart turn white?
I still know nothing about you, nothing about myself
Nothing about anything at all.
If opening my heavy eyelids means I'll destroy everything,
Then LET it all turn black!!!

Me and jazaaboo tossed around the idea of doing a flash vid to this in the same style as the famous video it has, just black and white silhouettes going through their stories, from humans to zombies/survivors. I still think it'd be neat. :O Maybe someday I'll do it.
Also did this shot to it, haha.

2. Little Boots - Remedy
Spin me faster like a kaleidoscope, all I've got's the floor
Yeah, you can try but I've found the antidote, music is the cure
So you can try to paralyze but I know best this time

No more poison killing my emotion
I will not be frozen, dancing is my remedy, remedy, oh
Stop stop praying 'cause I'm not not playing
I'm not frozen, dancing is my remedy, remedy, oh

Move while you're watching me, dance with the enemy
I've got a remedy oh, uh, oh, uh, oh

I picture the goofiest choreographed dance number with all four of them to this in my head. I want to make a flash vid of it someday. SOMEDAY.
Also if you're creative it can sort of relate to them being/becoming zombies at some point.

3. U - Little My Star
Oh my Oh my Little my heart
I will become honest
Fighting Fighting Little sister
I will protect you

You'll see eventually. Bwahaha.

4. Pendulum - Girl in the Fire

Similar to Eggs, I haven't drawn anything for this yet, but I picture a slower vid for this about them struggling along as Survivors, with possible flashes to them as zombies as well. I wish there was an easy way to just record these mental images I have but eh. Would feature Smoker playing a bit of guitar though.

5. Above and Beyond - Good for Me
To be with you is easy, oh baby
I know you're good for me, I know you're good for me
This feeling inside me
Oh, it saddens me
Sky

You're good for me, my baby
So good for me, my love
You're good for me, my baby
So good for me, oh love

Oh love

The alternative happy ending, where no one is infected, and they live quiet and peaceful lives together. For when things get too bleak and terrible I guess, haha. Goes with this shot of them as old ladies.

6. Linda Ronstadt - Dreams to Dream
I lose my way, no one cares.
The words I say, no one hears.
My life it seems
Is a world of dreams.

Deep in the night, you'll find me.
Dream and you're right behind me.
Stay if you will stay
We'll dream the night away.

This goes here because I actually have two associations with it - one with this shot of them as Survivors, and a longer series here with them as zombies.

7. My Neighbor Totoro - Sanpo (English Version)
Hey let's go, hey let's go
I'm happy as can be
Let's go walking you and me
Ready set come on let's go

The foxes and the badgers too
All come out to play
They all want to explore
The deep and wonderful woods all day

Look at all my many friends
Ready set let's go
Look at all my many friends
Ready set let's go

Because of this flash video, of course.
