Throughout her on-screen run, Kim's hair has been pulled backward, held up by a simple twist (pulled tighter, it would be a Croydon facelift). The only true deviation was her hair down in "Hothouse." Since she was allowed to deviate in "Hothouse," Kim might have had a few new hairstyles if she stayed.
Hairstyles can be a signature with female "Law & Order" prosecutors. Alex Cabot had her pageboy cut (with her infamous bangs). Jamie Ross had an interesting crop in MS' "School Daze." It's not always fixed, for Abbie Carmichael adopted several styles throughout her time. It can serve as a snapshot of a period in time and/or expression (Elisabeth Rohm elaborated on her bangs as expression in her apocrypha interview).
Since Kim has a twist, a French twist would be the logical progression, as well as being doable and attractive. If not, there's always the simple ponytail. Take inspiration from real life with some of Michaela McManus' hairstyles, if that helps. It's a pointless-yet-fun exercise, as such minor details, like hairstyle, can enhance the character.
Any discussions about her hair affecting her image will be for another time.
Exit question 1: As a side issue, do you prefer her hair to remain the same, or not? If so, why? I actually prefer her twist, as I'm used to it, I suppose.
Exit question 2: I'm not counting her long-hair wind-swept look in the Season 10 promos, as they aren't canon, per se. However, if you don't think so, convince me otherwise. MS' Jack McCoy/Claire Kincaid promos would be your best shot.
Edit: Thought of a better first exit question.
Update (5/1): I watched "Retro," a few days ago, and finally had a good look at her hair. It wasn't a bun, after all. My apologies for the error, and I re-edited accordingly.
