It must have been fate combined with sheer dumb luck that had Aya already steered toward the heart of Manhattan. She was on patrol alone, and in fact preferred it simply for the fact her conversational skills were limited and her partner often enjoyed talking her ear off until she found a way to tune him out. Silence also gave the cop a better opportunity to keep an eye on the world outside of her issued car-- crime rates were higher this year than ever, and Aya wasn't about to let that statistic get pinned on her reputation. If there was something suspicious going on within her perimeter, she'd know it ( ... )

Ceasing with the suddenness of a child's laughter, Eve came to a complete stop, the momentum of her upper body almost causing her to topple over head first onto the cement below. Although her own reflexes stopped her from falling to the pavement, even onlookers could see the young girl was visibly shaken as she looked over her shoulder cautiously. This person, this organic life form, was different from the others. She hadn’t noticed it at first, but her voice, her voice was familiar. Whilst Eve had no idea what a parent was, or what she had done, she did know that this lady was talking to her.

Turning slowly, studying the woman as she changed directions, Eve was surprised, even baffled learn what ‘she’ was. Her cells were tainted, but the usual virus that gave people ‘new life’ was gone. She was… like her.

Friend? or foe? Without a single word she swallowed and stood up straight, pulling to her full height as heat swirled around them, mental energy of Eve’s mitochondria washing against the two like a tide from what could only be ( ... )

Aya warily reciprocated the child's stare, feeling something heat up in the pit of her stomach as if she'd just walked into a heated room. It felt...strange, almost like her eyes were opening up a whirlpool that would swallow Aya up if she wasn't careful. Yet, she looked almost like a small animal, defensively determining if it was in danger or not. Just where exactly was this girl from? The woods? Couldn't she just speak up?

The cop awkwardly pointed to the badge in her hand after a moment's pause. Maybe I should've called child protection services instead... she thought, realizing she had no idea how to interact with kids. "Y'don't have to be scared of me," she said over the honking horns and shouts of angered people. "I'm a co--hey!" Aya almost tripped over her own boot as the girl suddenly fled and her own body struggled to follow. Once she weaved from the trash bins and grouped pedestrians, Aya broke into a run in chase ( ... )

To Eve it all happened in the blink of an eye. There were no thoughts, no brain talk, no concerns, just a firm hand holding her waist and the rush of air beneath her feet flying by with the bright blurry lights. Everything fell eerily silent, the sky, the earth, even the people whose consistent honking was similarly muted. The lack of sound was like the breath of some omnipotent force, sliding over her skin like burlap.

And then… She wasn’t moving anymore. Extending her small dirt covered hand grabbing the strangers, Eve watched with rapt concentration as the strangers face sharpened into a recognisable shape. The small blonde listened reverently, soft blue eyes taking in every word.

Not going to hurt you? Run? Cheetah? She had no recollection of what a cheetah was, yet something told her it was fast. The woman was taller and her strides much bigger while Eve could turn and move, move and turn, making her a very speedy little thing to catch. It had given her the upper hand at first. Unfortunately, she knew nothing of New York and ( ... )
