Being 6'4", it's kind of refreshing to be in a spot where I can look more than 18 inches up without a surface being there... and yet not have to worry about being rained on. Reminds me of being a kid.
(No, I don't have an arch like that at my place, but if somebody came by and added one I probably wouldn't complain. Until the light bulb burned out.)
My aunt/uncle/cousins live in a house with one of those. They live in Little Rock and it was built for them at least 10 years ago.
I always thought it was the stupidest thing. I mean, the big window is nice but the roof is too high to be useful (I've gotten rained on when standing under it). Plus, the window opens onto the front hall, which is entirely stairs. There's not even somewhere to sit and enjoy the view.
I've never asked them why they made that choice. Maybe they thought the light would be nice. It certainly makes the stairs feel more open than they otherwise would.
I'm glad you edited that to include the part about being rained on by standing under the roof. It makes me feel better about my opinion of the uselessness of this design.
It's ridiculous over here. Houses made of ticky tacky. Several Archies in a row broken up by similarly large-sized 250K-350K homes all spiraled out around the golf course.
Never mind the arches, the thing that amazes ME about your mom's neighborhood is that you can see one house with a beautiful green lawn under a sunny and cloudless sky, and then go a little bit farther on down the block and see a nearly-identical-looking home with a yard covered in snow. I mean I know the weather in southeastern Michigan can be a little bit unpredictable at times but that is just RIDICULOUS.
