Introduction to the Experiment Episode 23 Episode 24: Sakura's Little Adventure (Card Captor Sakura) or No Problem Too Small (Cardcaptors)
The Japanese version starts off with Sakura watching a program about castles and how massively huge they are. Sakura wants to live in a big house but Toya teases her about it, saying that she wouldn't like it. The English version skips this scene. The next day, at the end of the school day, Tomoyo asks if she can come over; she'll even bring homemade treats. Sakura is fine with that. So, Tomoyo comes with a strawberry tart/shortcake. Kero wants to dig right in but Tomoyo wants to measure Sakura first. Sakura is hitting a growth spurt so Tomoyo wants to make sure her costumes will continue to fit. Next, Sakura tries on her latest outfit. Then Sakura and Kero sense a Clow Card in the house. Sakura goes off after it alone and discovers it is in her father's room. She looks and looks and doesn't see it until she notices a bouncy ball of light. Eventually, the light touches her and she falls down. The next thing she knows, everything, including her staff which turned back in a key, is huge or, rather, she's tiny. A huge gust of wind blows her outside and her screams alert Tomoyo and Kero, who don't see where she went. She gets chased down by a cat and a praying mantis. Meanwhile, Tomoyo and Kero are wondering where Sakura went when Toya and Yukito show up. Kero hides and Tomoyo tries to stall by saying that Sakura went grocery shopping. Sakura makes it back inside through the bathroom window where she notices a ball of light on the water. It reveals itself to be a tiny person, which clues Sakura in that it's a Clow Card. She gets mad at the Clow Card for making her so small but the Card just laughs and bounces away. Sakura jumps into the water to go after it. Meanwhile, Tomoyo decides to get out of a tea party with Yukito and Toya by claiming that she brought a dessert and that she should bring it down. Faking a fainting spell to get Kero, Tomoyo heads upsides. Kero is dispatched to go find Sakura. Sakura is done swimming through the bathroom and once she gets to the ground again, she sees the Card and gives chase. She eventually ends up in the kitchen where Toya is, who is now huge to her eyes. She realizes that she can't be seen so she waits near a table leg but the Card seems to be going after Toya. Sakura shouts at Toya to look out which causes the Card to jump away and Toya to wonder whether he imagined Sakura's voice. Sakura gives chase again but the Card bounces upstairs and Sakura can't climb the stairs. Sakura is despondent until Kero shows up. Kero explains that it's the Little Card. It not only shrinks one's size but magical powers as well. That's why her staff turned into a key. The way to turn back to normal is simple: Touch the Card again and she'll go back to normal. Meanwhile, Tomoyo is still in Sakura's room and as she heads down the hallway, she notices the tiny light. She nearly touches it but Sakura shouts at her to stop. She flies in riding Kero and grabs the Little Card, which makes her normal again. She then seals it. After that, everyone but Kero eats the dessert. Unfortunately, Toya, not realizing that the last piece is supposed to go to Kero, eats it. All Kero gets is a tiny corner of a piece. Kero is sad but then remembers the Little Card. Sakura turns him little and he eats the tiny piece that way. The English version ends here. The Japanese version has Sakura watching the castle program but changing the channel to something else. Her father asks her why she isn't watching the show since she always looks forward to it. Sakura explains that she's had enough of big houses.

This is a fun episode. The parts where Sakura navigates the larger world are pretty funny. Although, I have to wonder: does the Little Card always make you absolutely tiny or is it variable? Can you make just one part of your body tiny? Can you just make yourself go down a dress size? That would be handy! "Oh no! I'm too fat for my wedding dress! Little Card, make me fit this dress!" BING!
Card Tally
Sakura: Windy, Fly, Shadow, Watery, Rain, Wood, Jump, Illusion, Silence, Thunder, Sword, Flower, Shield, Power, Mist, Float, Erase, Glow, Move, Fight, Loop, Sleep, Song, Little
Current number: 24
Li: Time, Storm
Current number: 2
I like both of the titles equally. They're both cute and fun titles for this cute and fun episode. It's nice to able to think, "I can't pick, they're both good!"
Very little (ha!) is changed in this episode. They cut the bits about the castle program which I think may have been a time issue, although it was cheesy at the end ("I'm done with big houses!"). But its removal didn't really affect the episode one way or the other.
Tomoyo saying that Sakura's fighting was "touching" was cut too. Again, didn't really affect the episode one way or the other.
Sakura's thanks to her father and the flowers was cut. Although this made me sad because I thought that part was hysterical, it's not that important to the plot so it didn't hurt the episode by its loss.
Besides cuts, the only major change is that Tori's voice isn't distorted when Sakura encounters him when she's small. I was kind of annoyed by the distortion (it must have been a pain for the fansubbers to understand) so I was glad it was changed. But, I don't know how sounds will change if one became suddenly small so maybe the Japanese version was more accurate. It doesn't seriously affect the episode.
Tori also loses two of his strongest teasing moments in this episode. One, because the entire castle scene is cut, and two, because he just doesn't tease Sakura about how she would never be able to make the dessert. They're both pointless and senseless bullying moments so I don't care much about their loss.
Oh, and the tart is a shortcake in the English version, which I liked, because it certainly looked more like a shortcake than a tart to me. Aren't tarts pies? And apparently Madison likes sugar in her tea with her milk instead of just milk like Tomoyo. I don't know why they bother changing that because they didn't even have any lip flaps to contend with.
Speaking of lip flaps, was that the reason Sakura's English voice actress was so stiff and off-sounding for most of the episode? In the opening, she elongates her sounds so much and sounds so monotone that it almost sounds like Sakura is being sarcastic!
Sakura: Suuuure, Madison. Kero looooves sweeeets. Espeeeecially yooours.
Madison: Fine! Be that way! *runs off sobbing*
Sakura: Madisooon! Come baaack! It's these lip flaaaps!
Although, lip flaps can't explain everything, especially that part where Sakura asks if what she's seeing is her furniture in this robotic voice. Okay, maybe she was trying to sound stunned but it comes off sounding robotic. Did Rhys Huber sneeze on her during
last episode's rehearsal or something? Once she's outside and getting chased by a cat and a praying mantis, she improves but seriously, what was going on in that recording booth?
Beyond that, I can't really think of any changes. And seriously, these changes are nitpicks. A pointless scene cut here, a joke dropped there, you know, little changes.
Okay, enough bad puns.
There weren't even many plot holes in this episode. And most of them aren't that major.
1. Man, Meilin and Li must have booked it out of class that day since school is just letting out during Tomoyo's first scene and neither of them can be found in the background.
2. How come everything the Little Card touches doesn't turn small? How come Sakura's father's bed didn't turn small?
3. Okay, Toya and Yukito must be absolutely deaf because Sakura is not exactly whispering when casting her spells, sealing the Card, and yelling about how she's normal. The English version is worse about this: Kero doesn't even bother whispering when Tori and Julian show up. Why can they never hear any of this? They're seriously only a couple of feet away!
4. Didn't Toya and Yukito think it was odd that Sakura was wearing such a weird outfit to go grocery shopping? And how she appeared on the second floor without walking through the front door?
5. This isn't a plot hole related to this episode in particular but it's been bugging me: Why exactly can't Toya know she's a Cardcaptor? Why all the secrecy? It's not like knowing she's a Cardcaptor puts a person into more or less danger. In fact, I could argue it makes them safer because then they are aware of being in danger. So, why not just tell Toya that she's a Cardcaptor and that's why this, that, and the other thing happens sometimes. I'm sure he'd tease her about it but, in the end, he could be helpful. I doubt he's going to sell her to a science lab or anything. (It's not like she's very good at hiding it anyway. It'd save her the headache).
In conclusion, because of the minimal changes, I judge these episodes to be...
Equal!
