YAY! I'm so glad someone who is a total Mary fan likes this bit of thinking. The thought just hit me a few minutes ago while I was doing laundry and, dude, I totally got chills. I'm really glad it makes sense to you, though.
And, please, feel free to stop by any time. Cheers! :D
I was so totally *FLAILS* when the connection hit. Also, as vaznetti suggested, Sam recognizing Mary must have been the thing that helped her remember herself. Basically, the boys helped her move on. That gives me so much hope that we'll see that paralleled with John.
I hadn't thought Mary's existance at her home that way, but I see what you're saying and agree. From all we know of her, she was a truly loving woman and her family was her center. *rolls eyes at self* So, of course she'd stay in the one place she could.
Mary must have been every bit as jackass-stubborn as John, as loving as Dean, and as scrappy as Sam I love that description. It's just perfect!
*laughs* Now, mind you, I have this total *waves hand* "film" if you will, of Mary telling her Reaper to stuff it, she's staying put.
I'm glad this works for you. I love that even if it is accidental (although, hello, I'm really thinking that SPN must have the world's most amazing writer's bible for its staff), this is entirely consistent with what we learned in IMToD.
And, yeah, I suspect that Mary totally could give Death the same sort of migraine all the Winchester men can. Heh. AWESOME.

Over the summer I tried my hand at a story with Mary and Death, but it never came together. Perhaps someday, now that I've thought about it this way, I'll give it anotehr try. the thought of Death bitching aboutthe Winchesters -- bunch of troublemakers -- amuses me to no end.
Mary must have been every bit as jackass-stubborn as John, as loving as Dean, and as scrappy as Sam to have turned down her reaper to continue as a spirit who, for all her love and possibly even because of her love, was going mad by inches... Dear god, but she really is John's soulmate.
:weeps::
Wow. This must be true, and yet I hadn't thought of it at all. All those years, her hold on sanity growing more tenuous every day -- and it's Sam's recognition of her that allows her to shape herself back into Mary Winchester, to return to the truth of who she is and why she made her choice.
I'm glad this makes sense. I hadn't even thought about the implications of Mary's presence in the house twenty years later until, well, just before I had to frantically write this out. I never understood why she had manifested as a flame to that little girl, though, nor why she initially appeared as such to Sam and Dean. (I mean, besides the fact that it was supposed to be a fun plot twist and a good excuse for a special effect.) That makes all sorts of heart-breaking sense in context of the conversation the reaper had with Dean, though.
You're right that Sam recognizing her must have been the thing that helped her remember herself. Ultimately? That was the very thing that freed her, too. Oh, baby. Talk about the promise of a cool damned parallel with the boys springing John from whatever hell he's in....
This was just one of those weird connections that snuck up on me out of nowhere. I'm glad it makes sense. I was *FLAILS* as I was trying to organize my thoughts enough to write it out.
Yeah. Given how much of this can be inferred from canon, I absolutely see why John never really recovered from her death.

Wow. She had to be a truly amazing woman. It's easier than ever to see why John was so broken by her death.
