The Golden Boy: Dean-as-Mithras Meta

Oct 06, 2006 16:50

ETA pictures here and additional resouces to support this cracked-out theory here.A few folks have asked me about the Dean-as-Mithras connection I've mentioned. Be warned, O Gentle Readers, this is purely Crack!Research. Will this spoil you for anything upcoming this season? Nope, although it's vaguely spoilerly for "In My Time of Dying." ( Read more... )

Damn, I'm jealous of your metas.

All that fire and water stuff reminds me of my favourite fairy tale.

My ficverse is leaning towards the Nephilim. Would you mind if I used your metas as research? You will be credited in the A/N

Oh, by all means, feel free to use this research. That's part of the reason I pull this sort of thing together -- so other writers and I can have these links all in one fairly handy spot. Glad you enjoyed this. (And what's your favorite fairy tale, if I may ask?)

I have two. Through the Fireplace, by Mary De Morgan and a tradional Scots fairytale. In the Scots one, the lover of the Fairy Queen falls in love witha mortal. For them to be together, he tells her to grab him off his horse during an UnSeelie Court foray. He tells her the Queen will do awful things to him, but his mortal lover must hold on, whatever she does. This happens and the woman holds on. The Queen realises that the couple really do love each other, and she's not going to win. Plus Fairies hardly ever meet love, no matter how they covet it. They respect it when they see.

She gives the couple her blessing and rides off.

I'm glad this worked out to be a fun, fairly readable essay. I've read enough dry, dense, eye-glazing academic texts to be all about making anything I pull together into something that's meant to be understood (and even enjoyed) and not just cited.

More power to you if you do decide to go back to school. That would be fantastic.

Cool! I had looked up Mithras on Wikipedia after reading your previous post, but the Wikipedia entry is more about the religion and barely explains any of the story at all. Thanks for the explanation~

Hey, I'm always happy to pass along otherwise useless and random bits of info when I can. :) I didn't bother to check the Wiki on this -- I'm not surprised it leaned toward explaining the religion more than the story, though. That bit tends to fall more within the realm of archaeological interpretations which aren't as frequently addressed in Wikipedia entries.

Definitely glad you had fun with this, man. I'm glad I could share why I see this particular connection between Dean and Mithras.

That has to be one of the coolest compliments I've ever gotten -- thanks so much for the props for the essay's structure. I hadn't really thought much about it one way or another except that (IMO) my point would make a hell of a lot more sense if I could provide some sort of context. I'm incredibly happy that I managed to pul this together in a way that flowed nicely enough for you.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this, too. :D

Dude! This? Amazing!

I'm in awe of your brain, 'cause when mine's got free time it goes into the gutter and contemplates where to lick Sam and Dean. Mostly Dean. *nods*

Heee! I'm glad you had fun with this. It was fun to pull together. (Also? Those boys need all the love they can get right now. *sniffle*)

Hell, I'm saving this one and the ones about John for a friend. He got really introduced to the show with "In My Time of Dying". I know he'll have fun with the metas.
