ETA these belated links -- I was closing tabs and realized I had a few sites from my Favorites folder I hadn't slammed up here as I'd intended. Here's this article on creating a GIS-based data model for the Nazca lines. This page has some great images of the geomorphs and biomorphs, although the author is clearly a bit of a flake so don't bother ( Read more... )

I figured you'd be all about the Nazca lines. *g* I hope you find the info suitably entertaining and informative. Ditto the latest batch of Egypt links.

Oh, hot damn. I wasn't sure who all would be into the Nazca lines. I'm delighted you had fun with this. You have any other particular academic kinks when it comes to archaeology or history stuff?

I love your links on Ancient Egyptian history. I seem to remember reading somewhere (racks ancient brain to no avail) that the theory that Thutmosis III destroyed H's monuments wasn't true - that they were worked over by that old egotist, Ramses III. In his case, it wasn't anything personal - just more in his quest to have his name on every stone, statue and monument in Egypt.

I could be wrong and often am but the theory about H & T's relationship has been challenged by a newer generation of Egyptiologists.

Plus Nazca lines. I just know that they were made by aliens. Isn't it totally clear? I do remember having friends who ran the local occult book store argue with completely straight faces about their other worldly origin.

Fascinating!

Oh, very cool. Clearly, I need to do some more reading and get caught up on what's gone on regarding the current theories on their relationship. Everything I've found was more or less old school (obviously) but I'd love to see how far back this theory started getting turned on its head.

I do remember having friends who ran the local occult book store argue with completely straight faces about their other worldly origin. There are essentially two questions that I am immediately asked when folks in RL learn that I am an archaeologist, which is why I've learned to introduce myself as a bank teller and just stare a lot until they go away now ( ... )

. It's just...Frank Zappa. And Geoffrey Chaucer. They're both in my brain and sometimes stuff just happens.

And that is just one of the many reasons why you are awesome.

And if by "awesome" you mean "should not be allowed to play unattended with sharp objects," you are SO RIGHT. *g*

That list of artists in your mother's hoard makes me crave MP3s.

Also, I was deeply amused to run across you posting on the Nazca lines today after having last night at dinner with Dad used them as an example when explaining what the White Horse of Uffington was.

My mom's taste in music has always been even more extreme than mine. I mean, I've always been all about NIN and Tool but I typically only listen to the really pissed off music when I'm running. Most of the rest of the time, my preference is the blues. I went to more kick-ass concerts because of Mom, though, since Dad's not into the metal and alternative music. (Go fig.)

If I can get my shit together, I'll upload and/or burn some of these for interested parties. That probably won't happen until after Oregon, though.

You made me smile by mentioning the White Horse of Uffington. Just for the hell of it, here's this and this.
