It was six am on the planet Krypton.
At least, that's what the Doctor had just told her.
She was now sitting, alone, watching as the planet's red sun peaked over the horizon, the Doctor having gone off to fetch the TARDIS from wherever he'd parked it. She was too tired to follow along behind him, so he'd insisted on her sitting to rest.
She sat, shivering in her heavy parka, thinking about this ice planet, the birthplace of her best friend. The same best friend she'd walked away from two weeks before. It didn't seem right that she was here, seeing it all, and he wasn't here to see it with her. She'd even met his parents.
She and the Doctor had met both Jor-El and Lara. She'd been awestruck, but of course, she hadn't been able to say anything. She'd been amazed by how much Clark resembled his birth father. He looked exactly like him, except Jor-El was considerably older at this time. Lara was strikingly beautiful, radiant with the soft glow of pregnancy. Chloe had been on the verge of tears when Lara had given her permission to touch her belly. Clark... Clark was in there. And apparently already kicking. Chloe was completely and utterly amazed.
And Chloe was sitting there, crying openly now, as she watched the red sun rise. All she wanted to do was talk to Clark... if even it was only for a few minutes.
She reached into her pocket, taking out her phone, and pressed the speed dial button. She hoped, that this time, it would work.
The phone seemed to ring for almost two minutes, and then, finally...
"Hello?"
Chloe's eyes widened in surprise.
"Clark?"
A pause.
"...Chloe? Oh my God, Chlo... Are you okay? Where are you?"
"Oh, God, Clark... I'm better than okay. And... if I told you where I was, you wouldn't believe me." She sniffled. "I'm on Krypton. Krypton, Clark. Can you believe it?"
"...Krypton? What?"
She laughed softly. "Yeah, Krypton. Oh, Clark, it's beautiful here. Cold, but beautiful. And I... I met Jor-El and Lara..."
She trailed off as she heard a bit of a static.
"Jor-El and Lara... what?"
Another screechy sound of static.
"Chlo, I can't hear you. You're breaking up."
She pulled the phone away from her ear, and glance down at the screen.
"Damn it." she muttered, and quickly put it back to her ear. "Clark, my phone is dying. Can I try to call you later?"
More static. It was almost like there was no use.
And then...
"I don't know if you can hear me, because I can't hear you... but I- --sccccttt-- I miss you so much, Chloe. Please- scccctttt"
Chloe managed a small smile through tears. "I miss you, too, Clark. More than you know. I'll be back soon, I promise. I'll call you again later, okay? Bye."
She hung up before she gave herself a chance to say anything else.
She tucked her phone into her pocket, and began to wipe at her eyes, cleaning up her face before the Doctor came back.
Moments later, the TARDIS materialized in front of her, and the Doctor opened the door.
"Ready to go, love?" he asked, and Chloe nodded, beaming.
"Yes, I am, good Doctor." She moved past him, stepping into the little blue box, feeling better than she had in days. She'd talked to Clark. She'd spoken to her best friend, and it made her heart soar, higher than the red sun in his home planet's sky.
All was right in the galaxy... for the time being.
