the lungworm part came from the original script of the reboot, as sulu was the replacement in the movie. so basically pike's helmsperson is one instead of sulu, haha

wearing the command gold can feel like the result of standing under a shower of piss for too long
This line, okay. This line. And:
“This mission was not meant to be a winnable one for a starship captain who limits their skill set.”

Oh gosh okay so I love One's solution to the Kobayashi Maru and I hadn't even considered it, and just. FLAILS. I know this comment should be about a thousand times longer but I just keep scrolling up to re-read and I can't even stop. One asking to be failed! I cannot even begin to explain how happy their exchange makes me. And One knowing that Pike passed her because he would have done the same thing -- just look at Pike in STXI, going off on his own and making Kirk first officer; he is so not the very model of a regulation captain -- and he wants that quality on his bridge (and that lovely face on his face) and he can tell her real smile from a fake smile only minutes after meeting her and my shipper heart is imploding, I tell you! you do not want to know how much time i spent on the kobayashi maru article on memory alpha okay. one's solution is inspired by sulu's solution from a spin-off novel (he basically didn't want to risk starting a war so he aborted the mission and left), except i think one would be more original than that (no offense to hikaru, it's not his fault that the author of that book ran out of good ideas when it was his turn).
but i do love the novel's account of how scotty and chekov approached their kobayashi marus ughhhh ( ... )
