And you know something? After reading the book(s), several of the scenes from the movie make a *lot* more sense. :)

As for the Dune books and Alia/Duncan shippiness, I think Dune Massiah has the most in the A/D department... by the time we get to Children of Dune, she's already been corrupted by that fat dude's consciousness taking over her brain.
Though I will admit, Alia was my favorite character in the books and in the movie, even after she had been taken over by the Baron. You can tell she wants so badly to be good, but can't due to the hand Fate delt her...
And yes, you should read the books... Children of Dune may have taken me *forever* to get through, but it's totally worth it.
