I've seen the northern lights once. It was really surreal to be standing outside in the driveway watching. I think it was the silence really ... that absolute silence that a thick blanket of new snow brings with it ... that was such a stark contrast to the beautiful dancers flowing through the night sky that I forgot it was cold outside and was just sucked into it.
We are able to see them up here once or twice a winter, usually. Mom and dad both have some *amazing* photographs of them. I remember one winter it was right around zero degrees and I noticed them all very bright and multi-colored to the north, so I stood out there and watched for a few minutes. Then I got the see the reddish half-moon rising in the east. It was probably one of the most beautiful things I ever saw.
