Jennifer strained once more. Just a little further, she thought. Still the wire circuitry was just out of her reach. She sighed in defeat, her teeth grinding against the flashlight held tightly between her teeth to illuminate the narrow duct. Now that she was done reaching, she spit the light out and caught it in her right hand. Then she turned her head as much as the cramped space would allow.
“Ronon?” she called, wincing as her voice echoes against the walls. “I'm coming out, ok?”
Though she couldn't see the handsome Satedan's face, she imagined he nodded a bit, though she only heard him say, “Ok.”
She backed out of the space and a moment later she felt his hands placed securely on her hips, steading her, as she shimmied out of the duct.
. . . . .
Ronon would rather have been the one crawling into the duct, but for once, his size came as a disadvantage. Jennifer was small; she would fit. Also, she would probably better understand McKay's instructions as to how to rewire the circuitry that was in there.
He let out a breath of relief when she'd finally called for him to pull her out. The duct was several feet above them. Ronon had to pull a table over to stand on so that he would be able to lift Jennifer high enough to reach it.
As the upper half of Jennifer finally emerged from the opening, Ronon saw she was hesitant to let go of the ledge, as if she didn't trust him not to let her fall. “I got you,” he stated.
Without a moment more of hesitation she let go, and Ronon instinctively pulled her to him before setting her down beside him on the table.
He hopped down to the ground and turned to offer Jennifer his hand, but he saw that she was shrugging off her jacket.
“I need to try again. I think I can reach further without this on,” she nodded toward the bundle of material that was her uniform jacket, before throwing it to the floor. “Duh, don't know why I didn't think of it before,” she huffed.
She was obviously out of breath from the activity, her face flushed from the physical exertion, but Ronon admired her perseverance. He climbed back onto the table. “Ready?” he asked, careful not to take liberties with touching her without permission. There was nothing but his body to give her leverage, so, as with the first time, she would basically be climbing him.
“Yeah, I'm ready.” He was almost taken aback by the steely determination in her brown eyes.
Ronon suppressed the urge to let his hands linger on her waist and then her thighs and lower leg as he helped her up into the duct. But then the tip of her shoe connected with his nose as she pulled herself up into the duct. She must have known it, for she paused.
“Was that your face?” Her voice echoed from above. He would have laughed at the sheepishness in her voice, but he'd just been kicked in the face, and it hurt. A lot.
“Yeah. It's fine. Just go.” He grimaced, trying to keep his tone neutral. He felt a the tickle of blood as it trickled down to his lip and rolled his eyes as her feet disappeared into the hole above him. Great.
“Sorry.”
. . . . .
Jennifer winced as she tried to concentrate on the task before her. She'd just nailed Ronon in the face with her foot. It was an accident, but, well, she just hoped he wouldn't accidentally drop her when she wiggled out of the duct again.
Without the confining material of her jacket around them, her arms had more freedom of movement. Her entire body fit into the tiny space, but the duct narrowed at the end, which prevented her from crawling further to reach the wires. She had to stretch and reach for them with her arms. However, there was only room for her to wriggle her head and one shoulder through. Fortunately, she would be able to do what she needed with only one hand. She clicked on her flashlight and stuck it in her mouth. She sighed as it illuminated the sight before her. The weren't many wires, and they were more like cables in thickness. She tried untangle and separate the cord lengths from each other.
“Ok,” she mumbled to herself, her brow furrowing in concentration. She mentally went over the instructions McKay had rattled off before they lost contact. “Please let this work,” she prayed, before reaching for the wires.
. . . . .
“Ronon? I'm coming out.”
Jennifer came out quickly from the duct. Leaning his head back to avoid any rogue feet, he caught her legs as she came down. Her torso was almost out when she stopped.
He waited a few seconds before calling, “Something wrong?”
He felt her wiggle, but she said nothing.
“Doc?”
“My shirt is. . . stuck.”
“What do you mean 'stuck'?”
“It's. . .unh. . .caught on . . . something.”
“Can you get it loose?”
“I'm trying,” she shrieked.
“I'll lift you back up.” That was all he could offer. The duct was too high for him to reach to help her.
As Ronon lifted Jennifer's light form back into the duct, he felt the table buckle beneath his feet.
And then it collapsed.
. . . . .
Jennifer heard a loud crash below her. Ronon hand were no longer supporting her, and she began to slide out of the duct. Her shirt was still caught, and whatever it was caught on scratched her side before she slammed her hands and forearms against the walls of the duct, stopping her descent. This was exactly why she hated heights. She dug her knees into the wall beneath her, but the smooth surface provided no purchase.
“Ronon!” she screamed. Even with the adrenaline pumping through her veins, she couldn't hold on forever.
“Yeah. I'm here.”
She dropped her head as she exhaled a breath of relief at the sound of his gravely voice. She heard what sounded like metal scraping against the concrete floor. She hazarded a look over her shoulder, but she couldn't turn far enough to look down at him.
“Are you ok?” she called. The crash sounded pretty bad, and Jennifer had no way to tell if Ronon had been injured in the commotion.
She heard him chuckle. “I'm fine, Doc. You can let go. I'll catch you.”
Jennifer squinted into the dark depths of the duct. She could see the jagged piece of metal that held the end of her shirt. She could reach it, but if she leg go without Ronon to support her, she would fall.
“My shirt is still caught,” she whimpered.
“Can you get out of it?” Ronon asked, his voice laced with concern.
Jennifer knew he meant her shirt. This was so not how she imagined Ronon seeing her bra. Sure, when she, Sam, and Rodney were stuck in that abandoned mine, she didn't hesitate to remove her clothing to make a rope if it meant getting out of there. But that was Sam and Rodney. This was Ronon Dex. For a moment she let her mind drift to the memory of what almost happened the last time she was stuck in a room with this man.
Oh, what are you debating about, Jennifer chided herself. You're locked in room, hanging from a duct, and there's the hottest guy this side of two galaxies waiting below to catch you in his big, beautiful arms if you just come out of your shirt and let go.
Jennifer let go.
