DongWoo had stopped believing in what people said somewhere between his first grade play when his father said he and his mother would be there yet never showed, and third grade when his best(and only) friend said that they would be friends forever only to turn around and find someone better three weeks later. That was when DongWoo decided that he would just stop listening to the untruths altogether.
He was barely ten when he began noticing that while many people lied with their words, the same couldn’t be said about their mannerisms. Always smarter than people took him for(he could lie just as well as anyone else it seemed), DongWoo had quickly gotten around the pesky parental locks on his mother’s computer and found that people always have tells; a look to the right or left or up or down. There were people who would fidget as though they knew they would be caught or even the pros that remained blank, but often gave themselves away with their eyes.
----------
It was in middle school that DongWoo discovered dancing. He quickly developed a passion for the art form since it was similar in his eyes to a person’s mannerisms. It was impossible to lie, every hip roll and flare speaking more truths about a person than words ever could. He completely immersed himself in the world, entering battle after battle and winning more than losing. Natural talent, he had been told by the instructor that his sister had introduced him to. The man, middle aged with a kind smile and sharp eyes, became the first person that DongWoo allowed himself to trust.
DongWoo made his first real friend on his sixteenth birthday. The Nam family had just moved into the house across the street and DongWoo’s sisters dragged him along when they realized that the couple had children, one around DongWoo’s own age. He was a very pretty boy with a greasy smile that hid the shy boy DongWoo saw the moment they spent more than three minutes introducing themselves. WooHyun seemed shocked that someone had seen through him so easily when even his own brother thought he was a player, but he just smiled and told DongWoo that they should be best friends.
DongWoo agreed.
----------
When school started again, WooHyun was instantly adored by everyone and adored everyone just the same. He was a hit with the girls(and even some of the boys), while the boys (and a few girls) were insanely jealous. He never dated anyone seriously beyond a date or two and the occasional one night stand. One thing he never forgot in the midst of his popularity was his best friend. WooHyun made sure that he spent as much time as he could with DongWoo and vice versa. WooHyun appreciated DongWoo’s candor and the fact that he had never been more understood by a single person while DongWoo simply loved that WooHyun always dropped his mask with him.
It was halfway through the year when WooHyun introduced DongWoo to a few of his friends. Lee SungJong who was as pretty as a girl but wished to be seen as more, Lee SungYeol, the school diva and prankster who simply wanted to make friends and belong, and Kim SungGyu, the prim and proper student council president who just wanted to drop all of his responsibilities and act his age instead of ten years older than his near-seventeen.
It was clear as day when WooHyun fell for SungGyu, and DongWoo rolled his eyes when SungGyu whined to him about wanting to ask out his best friend but didn’t know if he would say yes or not. Laughing, DongWoo called SungGyu an idiot and told him that he should just ask him out already because the sexual tension between them was driving everyone mad.
----------
Kim MyungSoo transferred into DongWoo’s class in the spring of his second year. Smart for his age despite being a few years younger, he bowed and politely introduced himself, then no one heard him speak again unless called upon to answer a particularly difficult equation. DongWoo approached him after class one day and dragged him along to lunch with his friends, seeing such a deeply ingrained pain in the boy that made it clear why he acted so heartless.
It only took three days before MyungSoo was smiling and laughing as SungGyu took a bite of the vinegar banana that SungYeol had brought as a prank for the salted coffee the prior day. It was also normal for MyungSoo to hunt DongWoo down when he was depressed or something bad had happened the previous night. His home had become MyungSoo’s second and DongWoo became an expert at dressing the cuts and soothing the bruises that always accompanied the late night visits.
----------
High school came and went and the group of six decided to rent a house together since they all knew that they would never feel as comfortable with anyone else as they did together. MyungSoo and DongWoo were the first to move in since the younger boy had all but moved into DongWoo’s house the night the police showed up to cart his parents away.
Next came SungGyu after he had finally been accepted into his dream school a few blocks away. DongWoo and MyungSoo had also been accepted there, so there was even more reason to celebrate. It was just the three officially with WooHyun there more often than not. Until he graduated, his parents said that he had to remain at home and not go off gallivanting with his friends even though they both adored them all.
SungYeol arrived in typical SungYeol style, flinging the door open and demanding that someone help him out since he couldn’t be expected to do so much manual labor by himself. The acting classes did well with helping him master the crocodile tears, but they all knew him well enough to tell him to suck it up and do it himself. WooHyun showed up the next day, elder brother reluctantly in tow. After getting WooHyun’s belongings into his and SungGyu’s shared room(and obviously avoiding asking about the single bed since his baby brother’s sex life was not something he ever wanted to think about), BooHyun told them that they could keep the brat before getting in his car and taking off.
SungJong was the last to move in. Within two hours of him graduating, his parents were helping carry boxes into the room designated for him. Once that was done and it was just them, everyone forced him to change and took him out to celebrate, something that ended up with half of then covered in cake and the other half in whipped cream. Once they all returned home and got cleaned up, they all crowded into the living room and marathoned movies until they all passed out.
----------
On his twenty first birthday, DongWoo met Lee HoWon. Running late for a job, DongWoo turned a corner and ran smack into the man and it was only due to the others quick reflexes(and strong arms) that he remained on his feet. Apologizing with a light blush, he turned and was about to leave when the man stopped him. He had just moved from Busan and was looking for the dance academy a couple blocks away; the same dance academy he was trying to rush to.
HoWon, or Hoya as he preferred to be called, was the newest teacher, replacing the man who had been far too grabby with DongWoo far too often before he finally reported him. Hoya had the structure and grace that DongWoo lacked and if anyone asked, DongWoo would refuse to admit that he was staring during the demonstration.
The two became quick friends, bonding over the latest hip hop song and the newest move that they had managed to master. There was something about Hoya that he hadn’t felt with anyone else. There were no pretenses and he saw no hidden truths or visible tells. It was for these very reasons that he found himself falling for Lee HoWon.
It got harder and harder to relax when all he wanted was for Hoya to pull him into his arms and kiss him senseless. It took some time, but he was finally able to act normal after MyungSoo pointed out that he was acting like a lovesick schoolgirl before getting kicked for the comment. Hoya never noticed as DongWoo was his usual cheerful self, but he didn’t mind if Hoya never noticed. As long as they remained friends, he would be alright.
‘Alright’ only lasted until Hoya introduced him to Choi SunYe, the pretty baker’s assistant who worked across the street. She laughed at his lamest jokes and hung on his every word. DongWoo ignored the pain as it grew stronger and stronger as the days passed because his friend’s happiness was far more important than his own. He had lived the majority of his life in such a state that it should be a simple thing to slip back into accepting that he would never be truly happy. He simply pushed that feeling behind the smile that he was well known for.
It was a chilly evening the day before DongWoo’s twenty third birthday when Hoya and SunYe broke up. It was one too many lies and a few too many 2am phone calls to a stranger that caused it, but Hoya didn’t seem particularly troubled. If he were to be honest with himself, the younger dancer seemed oddly calm; relieved even. DongWoo had been sitting beside the river, a place where he would often find himself when he needed to calm down(a place only WooHyun and Hoya knew about), when Hoya told him. Regarding Hoya’s demeanor for a moment, DongWoo simply gave him a lopsided smile before turning his attention back to the river.
Knowing DongWoo as well as he did despite not knowing him for long, Hoya took a seat beside him and followed his gaze before quietly asking why he seemed so sad. DongWoo paused before turning to look at the man beside him. He had to admit that he had been caught off guard when Hoya noticed because he had been so careful with giving things away.
Apparently, hiding that you were in love with someone you could never have was harder than it seemed.
Hoya spoke in words. More often than not, they were concise and to the point. He was never one for flowery words unless he had enough alcohol in his system, but he always got his point across. Then there were the times when his excitement would hijack his vocal chords, making him go a mile a minute about whatever happened to cross through his still processing mind at that particular moment. It was a quality that DongWoo found endearing; the top of the list of things he loved about Lee HoWon.
DongWoo spoke with feelings. A subtle wink or a bright smile usually spoke volumes louder than anything he could say aloud. He was never lacking for words, but when it came right down to the important things, it always came back to one thing: people lie. Even with his extensive knowledge of people, it still hurt when he was lied to. Feelings didn’t lie, and neither did actions. He was glad that Hoya had understood how he felt when they had discussed it one night months ago when they both were a bit more drunk than they should have been.
DongWoo and Hoya just continued to sit beside each other in comfortable silence before DongWoo started at the light touch against his cheek. Allowing that hand to direct him to meet Hoya’s calm gaze, DongWoo just blinked. This was new. They continued to stare at each other as they attempted to communicate in a language neither understood, but DongWoo had to admit that Hoya had very soft hands.
He wasn’t sure who moved first, but as DongWoo’s eyes slid closed, he found himself not caring because Hoya also had very soft lips.
