The Jane Austen Book Club

I've had the book on my bedside table for a very long time. Tried to read it but never really got into it. Today I watched the movie I bought for a euro or two on Ebay. Despite the fact that the plot is ultra thin and highly predictable, I was rather entertained. It's a sweet comedy - a little too sweet for my taste - with some for the movie ( Read more... )

Personally, I was very disappointed in the book which I admit I initially picked up because of the title. All the characters seemed very flat to me, and this was the reason why I never bothered to see the film. Somehow I only managed to see that last year, and I was surprised at how likeable I found it. Sure, as you said, it is predictable, but it is an easy-to-watch flick with a good cast, and I thought Hugh Dancy was adorable in it as well :)

An easy-to-watch flick, that's what it is, and I was entertained. :)

Did you already see - at least if you're interested - The Young Victoria? I can't wait, it'll be released next month here. :)

I saw The Young Victoria last month, and wrote a review here. It has a weak plot compared to other films of its genre, and really it is more a historical love story. That said, it is still somewhat charming, even if it is a bit bland.

Very interesting review, Stacy. I've read it. Of course we know what happened between the two, so the plot isn't that essential. I like to see those two together. So extraordinary that it was a love match, even though I don't think Prince Albert a very sympathetic character. He was the one who brought morals back in English society, right? What a dull man he must have been. LOL

I'm glad you liked Rupert and Emily so much.I think they're adorable. Two fine young British actors. :)

Thanks for your review Renée. I really enjoyed this movie. In fact, I liked it better than the book. It is 'light' entertainment. I read the book a few years ago, and liked that each chapter's story line goes along with whichever JA book the "book club" is reading. Yeah, Hugh Dancy is a definitely a cutie and, imo, Jimmy Smits isn't aging badly either. :)

Cheers,
Julia B

YW, my dear. I agree about Jimmy Smits. Hadn't seen him in a long time.

Erm... when are you going to open an LJ account?! ;)
