But in spite of her previous wishes to give Jack his longed-for son, she suddenly hoped with all her heart that she had not succeeded quite yet. For if this one was a boy, she might never experience her husband’s love again.

Poor Sophie, to be so torn between her mother and her husband, but the way you wrote her, I wish that she may continue to experience her husband's love again.

I am always in awe of the opportunities you find to give us the situations O'Brian never got around to write. :)

Gah! Mrs Williams! What a poisoner.

And, of course, her attitude was by no mean uncommon, but how dreadful that delightful young women like Sophie should have had to take note of them, without really understanding.

This is a true case of "men are from Mars, women are from Venus", but at least there was love between Jack and Sophie. I think you've caught Sophie's thoughts beautifully.

Mother-in-laws! They are either wonderful and helpful, or they are nothing but trouble. Poor Jack, poor Sophie. I wonder how many couples had similar trouble, and took wasted years to work it out...
