MAES 5: My Father's Enemy

In Reverse of the Medal, Fanny mentions that Jack had ‘always been kind to her’ which surprised me at the time because I could not recall a meeting between them taking place in the books. I figured it was another omitted scene, likely because O’Brian never expected his series to go as far as it did, and indeed, Master and Commander never makes ( Read more... )

I have fallen in love with your series, which would so easily be part of canon.

She smiled; she had once heard someone say the *enemy of my enemy is my friend,* and thought it was equally true that, *the friend of my friend is my friend* as well.
I wonder at your canny ability to find those little oakums and fill them out with third or even fourth characters, giving them a voice and raising them from unremarkable to valuable.

I love your Fanny, and small wonder, I adore your Jack. You convinced me that handing her a sweet is exactly what he'd do.

"He winked again, and waved his hand in a dismissive gesture. Understanding his meaning, she darted across the room toward one of the windows, opened it, and climbed out into the cool evening air."

Oh that's delightful! I can easiily imagine Jack doing something like that. I love the way you're getting behind the "minor" characters and inventing stories for them - brava!

I like the idea of the missing bits of plot needing oakum. I guess that makes you a caukers mate!Long may you remain so...

Such a clear picture of Jack here. And Fanny W is so clever.

I adore the bit where Jack slips her the pastry and covers her exit - a beautifully realised piece of action and so very sweet and true to his character!

...If I have one tiny criticism it would be that a child of Fanny's age would never refer to Jack merely as 'Aubrey' - and nor would Babbington or indeed anyone of inferior rank or status, it would be regarded as disrepectful - it would be 'Captain Aubrey' all the time. Hope you don't mind my mentioning it...

Othwise - lovely!

I know that it could be seen as disrespectful, but most of the gossip Fanny hears about Jack is from Harte, who does refer to him simply as "Aubrey" many times, so it seemed to make sense that she would think of him that way. As for Babbington...that was actually a typo of sorts, and I didn't even notice until you pointed it out. I'll fix it now. Thx for the beta-ing! I actually appreciate things like that, since all of these are un-beta'ed.

Love the idea that Harte, scrub that he is, would have an unabashed eavesdropper for a daughter - not so very lady-like, our Fanny! But eminently suitable for Babbs, I feel :D

And Jack's reaction is perfect - naturally he would think the only reason to sneak about a dinner-party is to snatch up a pastry! :D :D :D

What wonderful imagination you have put into these ficlets!
