Down for the Count, Day 2

I'm home sick today...with a new symptom no less! Not only am I congested, feverish, and achy, but now I have a ticklish/hacking cough, too. Joy!

Anyway, as I read through stuff on "the Internets" after waking up for the second time today (I woke up this morning thinking I could make it to work, then decided there was no way I was dragging my ass in ( Read more... )

Yeah, this cold my co-worker gave me is really kicking my ass...And I still had to go into work because I forgot to send my boss a report he needs today. Ugh--going to campus was such a drag since it's hot it outside and I feel extra nasty. I'm just glad going to work is a short five-minute drive ( ... )

Now, I may regret saying this when I become a parent, but why can't people just pay more attention to the media their kids are consuming? You rang? Why? Because most mothers are too wrapped up in their self-indulgent female magazine that promotes bad chick-lit, even worse sex tips and terrible fashion advice. And fathers are too wrapped up looking at Jessica Alba's naked bofy in the latest GQ ( ... )

You're right--most parents can't be bothered with such things...I mean my parents weren't perfect, but they did explain things to me when I was a kid and made sure to check on what I was listening/reading/watching all the time. My mom, bookworm that she is, always checked on what I was reading and talked to me about what I did/didn't like about a story, while my dad always took care to warn me about scary parts of a movie (because I'm a wuss) or told me and my sister if we should cover our eyes during a sex scene...It helped a lot that my dad and I listen to a lot of the same music, too--he introduced me and my sister to punk rock and I think I'm much better off for hearing it!

And I won't even get started on the whole Tipper Gore/Parental Advisory Warning stuff, or how movie theaters now require teenagers to show proof of age when seeing an R-rated film...

While my parents aren't perfect either my mom would read the same book together with me. None of this, "It's only a kid stuff" nonsense.

...require teenagers to show proof of age
This is unrelated but whenever I go to liquor stores (once a year mostly) the attendant never feels convinced that I'm actually the oldest in my friends circle, even though I bring id. -__-

Can anyone tell that I think censorship--even self-censorship to a certain degree--is stupid?

It's not just stupid, it's dangerous. I heard the Japanese people didn't really know much about WW2 atrocities they've caused, just because their government tried to cover it up. A History professor changed that, he sued the government for doing so and won.

"Those that don't know history are bound to repeat it."

I know that the history of war is bound to be bad (my Filipino grandma ends up crying anytime she starts talking about WWII), but I'd much rather have the situation in Germany, i.e., people going to jail for denying the Holocaust which would be a free speech issue in the U.S., than the possibility of a WHOLE NATION not knowing about their complicity in the death of millions of people...

Awww I hope you feel better soon!! It sucks to be sick in the summer :O

Oh jees, I can't believe manga is being censored. It's black and white lineart!!! When I'm a parent, I'll just make sure my kid is staying away from the hentai and after that I couldn't really care less XD There's so much violence and sex everywhere that I think it's better to be exposed to it and be educated about it than to be closed off from it. In my personal experience, having something censored from me just makes me want to see it that much more :|
