Possible dumb home heating question...

Hubby and I are debating over this - to conserve heating costs, is it more economical to open the vents in the basement or close them? Our basment is unfinished and so we are rarely down there. We kept the vents closed when we had the air conditioner on because there is no point in cooling an already cool basement but now that Fall is here and we ( Read more... )

I think you should keep them closed! Doesn't that just make more sense?!

Okay so maybe hubby is right. I just thought that the furnace may turn on more due to the basement being cold. Thanks for your input although I hate bring wrong hahaha!

Where is your thermostat? It's probably not in the basement, so just shut the vents in the basement and close the door to the basement (if you have one).

The door to the basement is always closed - kid falling hazzard lol! I'm kinda clueless when it comes to this sort of thing but it never ocurred to me that the location of the thermostat is where the temperature is being recorded. Makes sense and now I feel silly. Closed vents in the basement it is.
