On Saturday, I got my reserved copy of DH and started reading it at about 2:30 PM. When I closed the book on 3:00 AM of Sunday, I was left with an empty feeling, amongst other emotions

It's funny, I've had several people tell me it was "sad" - as in pathetic - that I would start a comm over this, but I'd say 60 members in three days is a decent number of people who are either upset about what happened (or at least how it was presented), or want to talk about it.
I think the Remus and Tonks plotline had a lot of potential... but by not taking any time to explain any of it or letting us see how the two reacted with each other, it came off as very deus ex machina, which is a shame.
Meh, the thing that's really sad is how the fans tend to act so ugly towards each other sometimes, like those who try to say it's pathetic to start a comm about this. It's not much different from starting a comm over HP at all, like there are so many out there -- it's just one that focuses on a particular character and the events surrounding said character. It's a better way for those who have a certain interest in a broad series to be able to discuss that interest.
And yes, it did have so much potential, and it's just so sad that it all came out so... junky.
As I said in my reply to the other topic -- Remus' fears about his condition being carried over to any offspring he would have is a very valid fear. Thus, I would damn well think that both he and Tonks, as they're BOTH very intelligent, would be able to work this out. The entire pregnancy felt like it was supposed to be an accident or somesuch, but wouldn't the wizarding world have even better methods of birth control than the Muggle methods?
I'm slowly listening to the book, and I'm near the end of the "Fallen Warrior" chapter. I wonder, was Teddy conceived after Tonks's confrontation with the Lestranges. Traumatic events can get the juices flowing, so to speak, and we know from PoA after he forgot to take the Wolfsbane, that Lupin can lose his head at times. In their rush and need to be near each other, did they forget their usual contraception?
The further I get through the book, the more my opinions change. I don't even know why I'm commenting. :/
I really don't think there's anything wrong with throwing out what you think at-the-moment as you go through the book.
And I had given thought to it being rather rushed-after-an-emotional-moment kind of deal. That could happen, but it still strikes me as rather odd. Again, though, that's just my own opinion.
I've never especially cared one way or another about Tonks, but otherwise I agree with everything you said. I knew I would be totally crushed if certain things happened, so I had fair warning about Remus dying rather than coming across it in the shocking way you did. I don't own a copy of DH and I don't intend to read it cover to cover until sometime right before the last movie is coming out.
The baby thing - OMG. It seems almost undeniable that this was not a situation where the two of them sat down and decided they were ready to start a family! I like your words, contrieved, drama abuse, and bad characterization.
Also, Remus losing his temper and striking Harry, and then taking off. Ms. Rowling, let me introduce to you Remus J Lupin, whom you seem to have forgotten all about since HBP.
I think if I had known that Remus was going to die, I might not have read the book at all. ^^;;
Oh god, and that whole scene with Remus and Harry, just... I just was stunned by it. Absolutely stunned. True, the man can get pretty emotional, but that far? Poor Remus and his poor characterization.
I'm not sure if it's this community in general or this specific post, but I'm crying again. You just put it all so eloquently. All I can really say is at least you finished the book. I feel so ridiculous that I was so captivated by Remus throughout the series that when he died it felt like I lost a part of myself. I haven't finished the book, I'm sure I will someday, but as of now, I can't get passed him dying with any enthusiasm. I skimmed some of the quotes, and some of the names that popped out at me, but otherwise, my DH ended with Lupin.
I do agree, especially with your characterization comments. It seems that the further you go into the series, the more common it is to see one character or another do a complete 180 in personality, only to twist back around after a book or so.
It is just sad that Tonks and Remy were denied the chance to straighten themselves after such out of cannon acts.
