The Bare Necessities (The Perfect Season Remix)

“Ignis Lentulus”

White-hot flame materialized in front of Draco’s watchful eyes.

“I don’t know that charm.”

Sitting cross-legged in front of the fire, his professor said, “Tomorrow night you’ll watch me cast the charm again, and then the next night you can give it a go.”

“All right,” he said evenly.

He was surprised at how much pleasure he found from building a small, controlled flame. Unbidden, a memory of his first soaring broom flight came into mind.

Being stranded in hell with a werewolf is far from ideal, but at least warmth was only a short intoned spell away.

“Do you honestly expect me to be able to do that?” Draco asked when Black scooped out another fish from the river. “I’m not quite as comfortable with menial labor as you are.”

Black spared a glance at Draco’s soft white hands. “No, I don’t expect you to do it straight off.”

When Draco grumbled that they don’t need fish that badly, Black said, “Werewolves require more protein than ordinary humans.”

Draco dropped his eyes.

The stream was frigid in the cold morning air. Draco clenched his teeth and felt his right hand going numb.

When a fish brushed against his fingers, he jerked his hand out in surprise.

“We’ll try again tomorrow.”

Black then showed him how to cook the fishes he caught.

Remus ate an entire fried fish. Draco couldn’t even finish half of the fish he was sharing with Black.

“Thank you.” Remus smiled at them both.

Sirius brought a tea-plant back to the cave, much to Remus’ excitement.

When Sirius remarked that there must be more somewhere, Draco said absently, “Seeds can be carried for thousands of miles.”

This didn’t deter their attempt to grow “a little forest of tea-plants.”

Under Remus’ supervision, Padfoot dug holes in front of the cave entrance.

The day after the first seedling began to sprout leaves, Draco found a purple plant that smelled like citrus.

“What’s this?”

“Smell it.”

Remus leaned down and inhaled. The bright, pleased smile on his face made Draco’s heart jump.

He shyly returned the smile.
