Oh. Oh, wow. This is just amazing, what you've done here. I love you've shown the other side of war, shown the battles fought by those not in uniform.

And that last line was just killer.

Brava, my dear, and thank you so much. *hands you a big bouquet of flowers*

I'm so glad you liked it! :) The original struck me with its take on Colby's family history (especially your reversal by making it his mother's line), and the other half almost wrote themselves.

*hugs bouquet*

Wow. I liked the original already, felt it was powerful, but you found a way to give us a companion fic that was equally powererful and, in a way, even more moving. The war at home is an emotion and taxing one as well so this focus shift makes for a wonderful and thought provoking story and as perfect a companion for the original as each of these mates is to their soldier spouse. The ending, pointing out that Colby has no one, just makes it all the more heartwrenching.

Very well done. /applauds/

Thank you so much! *takes a bow*

Yes, I found the original very powerful--and the chance to turn the concept right on its head was not to be missed. Poor Colby.

It's an incredible piece on it's own, and as a remix, it's brilliantly done. Like the original, you've got so much power, and history, in such few words. And seeing war from the "other side" makes it a perfect companion piece, without just repeating the same elements. And like [info]emmademarais points out, the last line, showing Colby having no-one? That REALLY hurts.

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! I definitely wanted to tap into the power of the original; it was great fun writing the entire other side of Colby's history. Poor boy; he needs someone to fight for, too.
