Original Fic: The Way We Weren't, by p_zeitgeist Remix: And the Way We Are (Gilded Cage Sampling) [Muraki/Ukyou/Oriya, 100 Words, Rated PG] by veleda_k
Oh, thank you, mystery remixer! Not only is this perfectly lovely, but I cannot believe the way you managed to bring this down to the essential 100 words -- I mean, I can believe it, the evidence is right here in front of me, but it's a trick I couldn't manage. Brava!
Thank you! I'll tell you, getting this down to one hundred words was hell. I was worried that it lost something in the shaping, but if you like it, then I am reassured. Mostly. I have issues.
Oh, I understand those issues so well. After all, I have them too. It's, like, a joint custody kind of thing. But I feel strongly that in this case, you really and truly have no reason for concern.
This whole challenge really brought home to me how difficult this 100-word thing is -- or perhaps, what it brought home to me is that the true masters of the form have a way of seeing and approaching the work that I do not. Without a word count sufficient to allow me to add context, I flail horribly. All of which is to say, hell or no hell, I have no words to express how impressed I remain that you could distill it down to 100 words, and have it work so beautifully.
Me, I'm still being all neurotic about the degree to which I really, really needed at least 500 words to do an adequate job with mine. I did manage to follow the rules, but I remain convinced that the results would have been better if I hadn't. Except for that whole defaulting thing, of course.
This is so wonderful--an amazingly insightful take on the original story and a beautiful drabble in its own right. And my favorite drabble in remix thus far. Thank you so much for writing this. You made me love p_zeitgeist's story even more.
